NHL Morning Skate: Stanley Cup Playoffs Edition – May 21, 2023

0

Matthew Tkachuk played overtime hero for the second straight game, tying the record for most overtime winners in a postseason and helping Florida become the sixth lower-seeded team in the past 15 years to take a 2-0 lead in the Conference Finals.

* The 2023 Eastern Conference Final has been a tightly contested affair, with the Panthers and Hurricanes within a one-goal margin for all 201:38 of playing time – the fourth-highest total through the first two games of a series in NHL history.

* The 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs is just the second in NHL history to have each of the first three or more games of the round before the Final require overtime with the only other instance coming over 90 years ago.

* The second Game 2 of the 2023 Conference Finals drops Sunday as Dallas aims to rally from a 1-0 series deficit for the third straight round while Vegas vies for a 2-0 lead.

DEJA VU: TKACHUK ENDS ANOTHER EASTERN CONFERENCE FINAL GAME IN OVERTIME

It was déjà vu at PNC Arena: the Panthers and Hurricanes required overtime to decide the winner with Matthew Tkachuk (1-0—1) scoring – again – to end Game 2, but this time just 1:51 of extra time was needed. Florida extended its road winning streak to eight contests, establishing the second-longest run in the postseason in NHL history trailing only Los Angeles during its 2012 Stanley Cup championship run (10 GP).

* Tkachuk scored his third overtime goal of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs – and second in as many games – tying Corey Perry (3 in 2017), Maurice Richard (3 in 1951) and Mel Hill (3 in 1939) for the most in a single playoff year in NHL history. He also matched Carter Verhaeghe for the most in Panthers history.

* The Panthers became the second team in NHL history to win each of their first six games that required overtime in a single postseason, joining the 2003 Ducks (7 GP).

* The 2023 Eastern Conference Final has seen the teams contest 201:38 so far through Game 1 and 2 – all of which has been with the Panthers and Hurricanes within a one-goal margin of one another. Only three other series in NHL history have seen the first two contests as closely contested (tied or within one goal): 1936 Semifinal between the Red Wings and Maroons (233:28), 1951 Semifinals between the Canadiens and Red Wings (223:29) and 2020 First Round between the Lightning and Blue Jackets (201:54).

* The Panthers and Hurricanes became the fifth series in NHL history to see over 200 minutes of game time through the first two contests, joining the 1936 Semifinals (236:30; DET vs. MMR), 1951 Semifinals (223:29; MTL vs. DET), 2020 First Round (210:27; TBL vs. CBJ) and 2003 Conference Semifinals (202:32; ANA vs. DAL).

ICYMI: Aleksander Barkov scored a highlight-reelgame-tying goal. The Panthers captain tied Ray Sheppard and Dave Lowry (both w/ 10) for the second-most playoff goals in franchise history.

STARS IN FAMILIAR PLACE, LOOK TO EVEN SERIES SUNDAY AFTERNOON
Game 2 of the Western Conference Final is set for Sunday afternoon on ABC and ESPN+ in the U.S. as well as Sportsnet, CBC and TVA Sports in Canada. The Stars will look to rally from a 1-0 series deficit for the third consecutive round, while the Golden Knights aim to take a 2-0 lead for the third time in franchise history – they have gone on to win the series in the two times they have done so to date.

* After falling to the Golden Knights in overtime of Game 1, the Stars find themselves in a similar situation to the first two rounds – they lost the opener to both the Wild and Kraken before evening the series in Game 2 and eventually eliminating their opponent. Only one team in Stanley Cup Playoffs history has trailed 1-0 in three different best-of-seven series before advancing to the Final in the same postseason – the Mario Lemieux-led Penguins did so in the 1991 Stanley Cup Playoffs before eventually winning the franchise’s first championship.

Roope Hintz recorded his fifth three-point outing of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs in Game 1, the most in a single postseason in Stars/North Stars history. Only four players over the past 30 years have more three-point contests in a single playoff year: Leon Draisaitl (7 GP in 2022), Wayne Gretzky (7 GP in 1993), Connor McDavid (6 GP in 2022) and Nikita Kucherov (6 GP in 2021).

William Karlsson, who has been with the Golden Knights since their inaugural season, recorded a multi-goal outing in Game 1 to boost his 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs totals to 7-3—10 (12 GP). He sits one goal shy of matching the most in a single postseason in franchise history, held by current teammate Jonathan Marchessault (8 in 20 GP; 2018) and Alex Tuch (8 in 20 GP; 2020).

* Vegas, which holds a 5-2 record on home ice in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, has made T-Mobile Arena a difficult venue for opposing teams since joining the League in 2017-18. The Golden Knights have an all-time home record of 27-14 in the postseason (including wins as the designated home team in 2020), more victories as the home team than six other current franchises despite being the second-newest team in the League.

DALLAS STARS POSTSEASON NOTES
TONIGHT’S GAME: After falling in OT in Game 1 for the third consecutive series, the Stars will look to even it up this afternoon in Game 2 of the Western Conference Final at T-Mobile Arena. (ABC, ESPN+, SN, CBC, TVAS, Radio: The Ticket 96.7-FM/1310-AM). This represents a rematch of the 2020 Western Conference Final, where the Stars earned a 4-1 series win en route to their first Stanley Cup Final in 20 years. Dallas is here after First Round and Second Round series victories over Minnesota (six games) and Seattle (seven games). Vegas, meanwhile, earned First Round and Second Round series wins over Winnipeg (five games) and Edmonton (six games).

STARS-GOLDEN KNIGHTS PLAYOFF HISTORY

  • This marks the second all-time meeting between the Stars and Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The previous matchup between the two clubs was in the 2020 Conference Finals, a series won in five games by Dallas, which saw the first instance in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44) of a Conference Finals or Semifinals series opening with each team earning a shutout within the first two contests.
  • The Western Conference Final represents the fourth instance in the past 25 years of head coaches, both in their first season with a team, meeting in the penultimate round of the playoffs. The last occurrence was also between Dallas and Vegas in 2020 (DAL: Rick Bowness; VGK: Pete DeBoer). The others: 2010 (PHI: Peter Laviolette; MTL: Jacques Martin) and 1998 (WSH: Ron Wilson; BUF: Lindy Ruff).
  • This is the southernmost final four in Stanley Cup Playoffs history (VGK: +36.1, CAR: +35.8, DAL: +32.7 & FLA: +26.1). The previous benchmark was in 2016 (PIT: +40.4, STL: +38.6, SJS: +37.3 & TBL: +27.9)

Game 1 Recap
May 19 – Vegas Golden Knights 4, Dallas Stars 3 OT
Brett Howden scored 1:35 into overtime to lift the Vegas Golden Knights to a 4-3 win against the Dallas Stars in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final on Friday night at T-Mobile Arena. Vegas leads the series, 1-0. Jason Robertson got Dallas on the board late in the first period as the visitors carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission. William Karlsson potted the only goal in the middle frame as his rebound tally made it a 1-1 game. Karlsson scored again early in the third, but a quick answer from Roope Hintz put Dallas right back in the game. Teddy Blueger’s goal with 10:40 to go gave the Golden Knights the lead again, but Jamie Benn tied the contest for the Stars in the final two minutes to send Game 1 to overtime. At 1:35 of the extra session, Howden banked the puck off Jake Oettinger to give Vegas the 4-3 overtime win.

VGK/DAL – Regular Season Recap
The Golden Knights held a 0-1-2 record against the Stars in the 2022-23 regular season. In the first matchup, Vegas was shut out, 4-0, by Jake Oettinger. In the second contest, Michael Amadio and Jack Eichel each scored to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 advantage, until Roope Hintz scored in the final 38 seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless extra session, it was Jason Robertson and Hintz who each put pucks past Laurent Brossoit to secure the comeback win in the shootout. In the final meeting of the season, Brett Howden got Vegas on the board first, but Joel Kiviranta tied things up for Dallas and forced overtime. Neither team was able to finish things in the extra session and it was Hintz who was the shootout hero again.

This is “Howie” Do It
Brett Howden was the overtime hero for the Golden Knights in Game 1 of the Western Conference Final as the Golden Knights topped the Stars, 4-3, at T-Mobile Arena. Howden’s score was his first since his two-goal performance in Round 1 against Winnipeg after he was limited to one point (1A) in the second round. The forward’s overtime winner on Friday night was his first career overtime goal (regular season or playoffs) and the first game-deciding goal of his playoff career.

Keeping it Cool
The Golden Knights have allowed the first goal in nine of their 12 playoff games this year. Vegas holds a record of 6-3 after allowing the first goal in the game. Vegas’ three games scoring first is the fewest among the final four teams in the 2023 playoffs. Additionally, the Golden Knights recorded their seventh comeback win of the postseason on Friday, the most of any team.

Magic Number
Vegas is 41-3 all-time when scoring at least three goals in the playoffs, including wins in each of the last 29 such instances. In all three losses this postseason, the Golden Knights have been held to a single goal.

Familiar Territory
The Golden Knights advanced to the Western Conference Final for the fourth time in their six seasons as a franchise. Vegas is the third club in NHL history to advance to the round before the Stanley Cup Final four times in their first six seasons behind the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues. This is the second time that Vegas meets Dallas in the Western Conference Final after they were defeated by the Stars in 2020.

In the Winning Business
Vegas (47-31 in 78 GP) has a postseason winning percentage of .603, leading all NHL franchises. The Golden Knights’ 47 playoff wins are the second-most in the NHL since 2017-18, trailing only Tampa Bay’s 98 victories.

x – Marks the Spot
Vegas is the seventh franchise in NHL history to reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs five or more times in its first six seasons, after the Rangers (6 of 6), Blues (6 of 6), Oilers (6 of 6), original Ottawa Senators (5 of 6), Minnesota North Stars (5 of 6) and Quebec Nordiques (5 of 6)

NBA Playoffs Eastern Conference Finals Game 3 Preview: Boston Celtics (0-2) at Miami Heat (2-0)

0

The Heat will look to continue their winning ways at home and push the Boston Celtics to the brink of elimination on Sunday when their Eastern Conference finals series shifts to Miami.

The eighth-seeded Heat have won all five of their home games in the playoffs thus far. They also have backed the second-seeded Celtics into a corner by winning the first two games of the best-of-seven series in Boston.

Jimmy Butler collected 27 points, eight rebounds and six assists in Miami’s 111-105 victory over Boston on Friday, while Bam Adebayo contributed 22, 17 and nine, respectively.

But they weren’t alone as Caleb Martin and Duncan Robinson added strong performances off the bench on Friday. Martin poured in 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the floor, while Robinson added 15 with a 6-for-9 effort.

Jayson Tatum led Boston in points (34), rebounds (13) and assists (eight) on Friday, however he failed to convert a field goal in the fourth quarter for the second straight game.

Tatum and Jaylen Brown combined to make just 4 of 17 attempts from 3-point range.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla was succinct when asked about his message to his team after it let a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter go by the boards on Friday.

And Boston also will need to be careful not to ignite a spark under Butler. Grant Williams unintentionally did that by getting in Butler’s face, with the latter later admitting that he was fueled by the heated exchange.

The Celtics will need to respond in Game 3. If they don’t, the Heat will be on the brink of advancing to the NBA Finals for the second time in four seasons.

Game 4 is slated for Tuesday night in Miami.

WNBA Preview: Chicago Sky (1-0) at Phoenix Mercury (0-1)

Brittney Griner played just fine in her first WNBA game in more than a year and a half.

But her Phoenix Mercury team fared poorly in a 94-71 season-opening loss to the Sparks on Friday night in Los Angeles.

The Mercury will try to do better in their home opener when they face the Chicago Sky on Sunday afternoon. The Sky opened with a 77-66 victory against the Lynx on Friday in Minneapolis.

Griner, returning from a full-season absence while she was detained in a Russian prison on drug-related charges, scored a game-high 18 points and added six rebounds and four blocks in 25 minutes and helped Phoenix build an 11-point lead during the first quarter. But that quickly fizzled.

The Sky, who beat the Mercury in the 2021 WNBA Finals in Griner’s last action before Friday, took control by outscoring Minnesota 22-3 in the second quarter as the Lynx made just 1 of 15 shots from the floor and turned the ball over 11 times.

Kahleah Copper scored 20 points and Alanna Smith added 15 points for the Sky, who trailed 24-22 entering the pivotal second quarter.

WNBA Preview: Indiana Fever (0-1) at New York Liberty (0-1)

With lots of debuts out of the way, the Indiana Fever and New York Liberty will try to accomplish another first when they meet Sunday afternoon in New York.

One of these teams will pick up its first victory of the season.

Both teams lost season openers Friday night, with the Fever falling at home to the Connecticut Sun and the Liberty losing a road game to the Washington Mystics.

It could take time before these teams gel.

Guard Sabrina Ionescu collected 18 points and eight rebounds for the Liberty, however Breanna Stewart finished with just 12 points on 3-for-10 shooting from the field in her Liberty debut.

On Sunday, Stewart will play at home for her home-state team. She spent her entire pro career with Seattle.

The Liberty also might look for more from forward Jonquel Jones, who was limited to 19 minutes in the opener. Brondello said with Jones and Courtney Vandersloot still working back into full-time form, their playing time might be abbreviated early in the season.

The Fever have a star in the making in rookie Aliyah Boston, who was the overall No. 1 pick in last month’s draft. She provided 15 points and nine rebounds in her professional debut, a 70-61 setback to the Sun.

Boston, a college standout for South Carolina, is expected to make a big impact for the Fever.

Mitchell gave the Fever a game-high 20 points. The Fever, who were hindered by 33.3 percent shooting from the field, got minutes from 10 players in the opener.

First-year coach Christie Sides of the Fever is in search of her first victory. Her first game in charge was hindered by a 43-35 rebounding deficit and Indiana’s 19 turnovers.

The Liberty had good work on the boards against Washington, securing a 40-32 advantage in that category.

WNBA Preview: Washington Mystics (1-0) at Connecticut Sun (1-0)

The Washington Mystics firmly stood their ground against the WNBA’s newest super team to begin the 2023 season.

Meanwhile, the Connecticut Sun avoided a fourth-quarter collapse to spoil the debut of the league’s No. 1 overall pick.

Both squads will aim to build on Friday’s season-opening wins when the Mystics and Sun meet on Sunday in Uncasville, Conn.

Washington glided past the visiting New York Liberty 80-64 on Friday night behind a stout defensive display against a team many consider a title favorite.

The Mystics stifled former MVPs Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, both of whom the Liberty acquired in the offseason, to a combined 17 points on 5-for-16 (31.3 percent) shooting.

Washington also forced four of New York’s 22 turnovers from newly acquired Courtney Vandersloot, the league’s all-time assists average leader, and held returning star Sabrina Ionescu to 18 points on a dreary 7-for-20 (35 percent) mark in the statement win.

Cloud and Ariel Atkins scored 14 points apiece to lead Washington, while Elena Delle Donne added 13 to begin what she hopes is her healthiest season in four years. Back injuries have limited Delle Donne to just 31 games since her MVP campaign during the Mystics’ 2019 championship run.

The Sun used a balanced scoring output from their core of DeWanna Bonner (19 points), Alyssa Thomas (18) and Brionna Jones (13) to hold off top pick Aliyah Boston and the Indiana Fever 70-61 on Friday in Indianapolis.

Connecticut never trailed en route to building a 19-point lead in the third quarter before the Fever surged back in the game’s closing minutes.

Boston’s layup trimmed the Sun’s lead to three with 2:25 remaining, but Thomas scored six straight points for her team down the stretch to lock up a win in head coach Stephanie White’s Sun debut.

Boston finished with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

The Sun went 2-1 against the Mystics in last season’s matchups, all of which were won by the home team.

CLOCKING OVERTIME
In Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Matthew Tkachuk scored his second career Stanley Cup Playoffs overtime goal (and second in 2023, Round 1, Game 5 at BOS). With the goal, the Panthers improved to 5-0 in overtime in the 2023 postseason; four of the five extra frame victories have come on the road. Florida has won eight consecutive playoff games that have gone to overtime dating to Game 3 of Round 1 at TBL in 2021. The goal scorers of all eight tallies are currently active on the Cats (Carter Verhaeghe 3x, Matthew Tkachuk 2x, Nick Cousins, Sam Reinhart, Ryan Lomberg). Three of the goals have been series clinchers, which had not occurred in club history prior to Verhaeghe’s goal in Round 1, Game 6 at WSH in 2022. Tkachuk has factored on three overtime goals for the Panthers this postseason, one shy of the most by any player in a single playoff year in NHL history. Sergei Bobrovsky has earned the win in all eight OT games over the past three postseason runs.

ROAD WARRIORS
The Cats enter Game 1 against Carolina having won each of their past six road playoff games dating back to Game 2 at BOS, the longest playoff road win streak in club history. Only 13 teams in NHL history had won at least six consecutive road postseason games, most recently Colorado in 2022 and Los Angeles in 2012. Over their six-game road win streak, the Cats have outscored their opponents 24-15, including overtime wins in Games 5 and 7 at Boston and Game 5 at Toronto. Sergei Bobrovsky has started and won each of Florida’s past five road games, logging a cumulative .942 save percentage over Florida’s five road outings since Game 5 at Boston. Over that span, Carter Verhaeghe leads Florida with eight road points (3-5-8), one of three Cats to post a point per game average on the road (also: Matthew Tkachuk [1-6-7], Aleksander Barkov [1-4-5]). The Panthers lead all teams with six road wins in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, owning a 6-1 road record.

CATS VS. CANES
Florida will face off against Carolina in the postseason for the first time. The two clubs share several connections, notably:

  • The series will be the first to feature three brothers (Eric, Marc and Jordan Staal) since Brent Sutter (CHI) defeated Rich & Ron Sutter (STL) in the 1992 Norris Division Semifinals. Jared Staal serves as an assistant coach for Florida’s AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.
  • Eric Staal, a first-round selection (2nd overall) by Carolina in the 2003 NHL Draft, led the Canes to the club’s first Stanley Cup in 2005-06, posting a team-high (and franchise record) 28 playoff points (9-19-28) during their run. The team was captained by current Carolina head coach Rod Brind’Amour. Eric would go on to serve as the Hurricanes captain from 2009-10 to 2015-16.
  • Florida Head Coach Paul Maurice served as bench boss for the Hurricanes franchise for 13 total seasons (1995-96 to 2003- 04, 2008-09 to 2011-12), including their first year in Raleigh after moving from Hartford prior to the 1997-98 season. Maurice coached the franchise to the 2002 Stanley Cup Final and 2009 Eastern Conference Final.
  • Florida Assistant Coach Tuomo Ruutu skated in 378 games with Carolina from 2007-08 to 2013-14, amassing 216 points (90-126-216).

CAROLINA HURRICANES NOTES:

GAME ONE
The Hurricanes suffered a 3-2 loss against the Panthers in quadruple overtime at PNC Arena on Thursday, losing a playoff overtime game for the first time since 2021 in the longest contest in franchise history (139:47). Frederik Andersen set a franchise playoff record with a career-high 57 saves on 60 shots, and 17 of Carolina’s 19 players set new career highs for ice time. Seth Jarvis and Stefan Noesen each scored on the power play, and Jarvis tallied an assist on Noesen’s goal for his fifth career postseason multi-point outing.

CHICAGO CUBS NOTES:

The Cubs and Phillies face each other in six games this season … following the three contests this weekend, the teams will also play June 27-29 at Wrigley Field … Chicago last year picked up the season sweep of the Phillies for the first time in franchise history … the Cubs have won four of the previous five season series against Philadelphia.

THE CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE: The Chicago Cubs today play the second of three games in Philadelphia in the final leg of a nine-game, three-city, 10-day road trip (2- 5), after winning game one of the series 10-1 … Marcus Stroman picked up his eighth quality start of the season, tied for the most in the majors, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing one run on three hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

With the win last night, Chicago snapped a season-high five-game losing streak, the longest such stretch since July 30-Aug. 42 of last season.

The Cubs went 10-3 in 13 games from April 4-19, but have gone 9-18 in 27 contests starting April 20 … Chicago has lost four-straight road series, with the last series victory coming April 17-19 at Oakland.

Today is the 21st game (6-14) of a stretch that sees the team on the road for 16 of 22 contests through May 21.

“IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA” IS SO GOOD: The Cubs have won seven-straight games against the Phillies dating to July 22 of last season, including Chicago’s six-game season-sweep against the Phillies last year, the first in team history against Philadelphia … in these seven games, the Cubs have outscored Philadelphia 43-11 with Cubs hitters picking up 18 doubles, 11 homers and five stolen bases while Chicago pitchers have posted a 1.27 ERA (9 ER/64.0 IP) with a 1.05 WHIP.

The previous time the Cubs won at least seven-straight games against the Phillies was July 7, 1995-June 3, 1996 … the last time the Cubs won more than seven against the foes from Philly? … May 6-June 14, 1947, when they strung together nine consecutive wins.

The Cubs have also won four-straight at Citizens Bank Park, Chicago’s longest winning streak at this stadium … the last win streak of at least four games on the road against the Phillies in any ballpark came July 25, 2000-April 7, 2001 (5 games) at Veterans Stadium.

MORE FOR MOREL: Christopher Morel hit his sixth home run of the season last night in his ninth game of the year … Morel is the second Cub in franchise history (since 1901) to record six home runs in the first nine games of a season, joining Gabby Hartnett (1925) who also tallied six homers in that span.

Morel has scored at least one run in each of his first nine games of the season … the only other Cub since 1900 to do so was Hank Sauer in 1954, who held the streak for 13 games. (credit: Elias Sports Bureau).

What’s more? … Morel has also recorded at least one hit and one run in nine consecutive games … the last Cub to record a stretch of at least nine-straight games with a hit and a run scored was Starlin Castro July 31-Aug. 9, 2011 … Morel is the only Cub in franchise history (since 1901) to hold such a streak from the start of his season.

WELCOME BACK: Nico Hoerner last night returned from the injured list (left hamstring strain) and went 3-for-6 with two doubles and four RBI … he joined a list of three other Cubs hitters who found success in their returns … Seiya Suzuki hit a home run in his first game off the IL (April 14), also his first game of the year … in Cody Bellinger’s return from the Paternity List (April 28), he recorded his only triple of the year and first since Aug. 2, 2022 … and on May 10, Gomes went 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a walk … all told, in Cubs returns, they are hitting .444 (8-for-18) with 2 doubles, a triple, two homers and seven RBI.

SEIYA LATER, BALL!: Between his ninth inning home run on Tuesday and home runs in the first and third innings on Wednesday, Seiya Suzuki went deep in three-straight plate appearances … according to Elias Sports Bureau, Suzuki is the first Cub to have a home run in three consecutive plate appearances since Kris Bryant May 17, 2019 … he is the first Japanese-born player to achieve the feat in the majors. © Seiya’s first home run on Wednesday was his 200th home run in the Nippon Professional Baseball organization (Japan) and Major League Baseball, combined.

Through the first seven games of this road trip, Suzuki is hitting .400 (10-for25) with three doubles, four home runs, seven RBI and five runs scored.

The last time the Cubs gave up first-inning runs in seven-straight games? … Sept. 10-18, 1961 for eight games in a row … eight-straight is a club record and was also done in 1893 and 1890.

LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD: The Cubs have scored at least one run in each of their first 44 games in 2023, just the second time in the expansion era (since 1961) the team has gotten on the board in each of its first 44 contests … the longest season-opening streak in this span: 47 G in 1995.
