Dodgers recall Alex Vesia

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers have recalled left-handed pitcher Alex Vesia and optioned right-handed pitcher Gavin Stone to Triple-A.  

Vesia, 27, returns for his second stint with the team after going 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA (9 ER/10.1 IP) and 15 strikeouts in 13 games with the Dodgers this season. He appeared in 10 games for the Oklahoma City Dodgers, allowing five runs in 9.2 innings with 18 strikeouts. In his last nine outings with the club, he has posted a 0.00 ERA (0 ER/9.1 IP) with 18 strikeouts against five hits. He is in his third season with Los Angeles, and he is a combined 8-3 with a 2.78 ERA (32 ER/103.2 IP) and 147 strikeouts in 116 games. He has been in the Major Leagues parts of four seasons with Miami (2020) and Los Angeles (2021-23) and he is 8-4 with 152 strikeouts in 108.0 innings. He was originally acquired from the Miami Marlins on February 12, 2021 along with right-hander pitcher Kyle Hurt in exchange for right-handed pitcher Dylan Floro.

Stone, 24, made three appearances for the Dodgers, allowing 16 runs on 23 hits in 10.0 innings.  Last season, he was named the 2022 Dodgers Branch Rickey Pitcher of the Year after going a combined 9-6 with a 1.48 ERA (20 ER/121.2 IP) and 168 strikeouts between High-A Great Lakes, Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City. The Arkansas native has been in the Dodger system since being drafted in the 5th round of the 2020 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Central Arkansas and he is a combined 13-10 with a 2.68 ERA (74 ER/248.1 IP) and 347 strikeouts.

MLS Preview: New England Revolution (7-3-4) at Atlanta United FC (6-4-5)

The New England Revolution have won three of its four matches against the Atlanta United FC (D1) since the start of the 2021 season. Prior to that, Atlanta United FC had never lost to the New England Revolution (W5 D2, including playoffs).

Atlanta United FC has followed a four-match losing streak in all competitions by going unbeaten in three straight (W1 D2), including a 1-1 draw with Orlando City SC on Saturday on an 86th-minute equalizer by Tyler Wolff. That made it 17 straight league games with a goal for Atlanta, the longest active streak in MLS.

Despite coming back to draw, 3-3. against the Chicago Fire on Saturday, the New England Revolution is winless in three straight league matches (L1 D2), conceding eight times in those games. The New England Revolution had won seven of their first 11 league matches this year (D3 L1), allowing only nine total goals in those games.

20-year-old Tyler Wolff scored Atlanta United FC’s lone goal in its 1-1 draw at Orlando City SC on Saturday, the fifth goal scored by players under 21 years old for the Five Stripes this season (C. Wiley 3, T. Wolff 2). No other team has more than three goals scored by players 20 years old or younger this season.

Jozy Altidore came off the bench to score and 83rd-minute equalizer for the New England Revolution against the Chicago Fire on Saturday, his 17th goal as a substitute in his MLS career, tied with Chris Wondolowski for third-most in league history. Only Jeff Cunningham (28) and Aln Gordon (25) score more times off the bench.

Los Angeles is 17-7 at Dodger Stadium this season (.708), good for the best home record in the National League. The Dodgers hold a 1.5 games lead in the National League West division over Arizona and are 4.5 games ahead of the third-place San Francisco Giants. This evening on Memorial Day, the Boys in Blue begin a six-game homestand with a 6:10 p.m. start vs. the Washington Nationals. Following the three games vs. the Nats and an off day on Thursday, the Dodgers welcome in the New York Yankees for a three-game weekend series (June 2-4), culminating with ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball to close out the stand. Los Angeles (.593) owns the second-best record in the National League behind Atlanta and the sixth best mark in the big leagues, trailing Tampa Bay (.709), Baltimore (.642), Texas (.635), Atlanta (.604) and Houston (.596). CAN’T STOP TILL YOU GET ENOUGH: The Dodgers battled back from an early four-run deficit, but ultimately came up short and lost the finale of their 10-game road trip, 11-10, in a game that saw a combined 21 runs and 27 hits. Rookie right-hander Gavin Stone made his third-career start and was hammered, giving up seven runs on 10 hits in 2.0 innings. The contest saw 17 of the 21 runs scored in the first 4.0 innings and the starting pitchers combined to allow 17 runs. Offensively, Chris Taylor led the charge for the Dodgers, going 3-for-3 with two solo homers and a Dodger season high tying three runs scored. The two homers matched a career high for the fifth time as he turned in his first multi-homer game since 2021. Taylor, who is tied for fourth on the Dodgers with nine home runs, didn’t belt his ninth homer last season until Sept. 11, his 102nd game. Trayce Thompson got the start in center field yesterday and broke out of an 0-for-39 slump in a big way, going 3-for-3 with a solo homer, two RBI and a walk. The game was Thompson’s first multi-hit contest since April 1. The hitless streak was the longest by a non-pitcher in L.A. Dodger history.

LOCKED IN: Dodger designated hitter J.D. Martinez went 2-for-5 with a solo homer yesterday and has been on fire since returning from the injured list on May 12. He has hit safely in 14 of 15 games, batting .318 (20-for-64) with three doubles, six homers and 18 RBI. In his career, May has been his most productive month, clubbing 59 homers and driving in 162 runners while recording an .894 OPS. His current 12-game hitting streak is the second longest by a Dodger this season.

MILLER TIME: Dodger rookie pitcher Bobby Miller will make his second-career start tonight and first at Dodger Stadium. Miller picked up his first ML victory in his debut last Tuesday in Atlanta, becoming the first Dodger starter to win his big league debut since José De León on Sept. 4, 2016.

THE GLUE: Dodger catcher Will Smith pinch hit and went 0-for-1 yesterday and is now batting .321 (25-for-78) with three doubles, four homers in the month of May with a .946 OPS. The Dodgers are 24-12 (.667) when Smith has appeared in a game and 24-9 (.727) when he starts.

FABULOUS FREDDIE: Dodger first baseman Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to 17 games on Sunday, going 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored. Freeman is batting .441 (30-for-68) with four homers, 10 doubles, one triple, 18 RBI and 15 runs scored during the streak and has hit safely in all but two games in May. Freeman is tied with Jonathan India for third in the Major Leagues with 44 runs scored, trailing just Ronald Acuña Jr. (48) and Marcus Semien (46). He clubbed his 300th career homer on May 18 and became just the fifth player in franchise history to accomplish that feat in a Dodger uniform. Freeman leads the Major Leagues with 22 doubles and 32 extra-base hits while ranking second in hits (72) and third in batting average (.335). His 300th career homer came in grand fashion, as he clubbed his fourth career Grand Slam to achieve the milestone. Freeman became just the second person in MLB history to hit No. 300 for a Grand Slam, joining Ruben Sierra, who clubbed his 300th on August 28, 2004, for the Yankees at Toronto. Eric Haase hit a game-ending sacrifice fly off Reynaldo López in the 10th inning to give Detroit a 6-5 win and series victory.

The White Sox were retired in order in the top of the 10th, stranding Luis Robert Jr. … the Tigers tied the game in the ninth against Joe Kelly on Riley Greene’s one-out triple and Javier Baez’s RBI groundout to Tim Anderson.

MICHAEL SOROKA: The Braves today recalled RHP
Michael Soroka from Triple-A Gwinnett, and he will start tonight…It marks his first major league appearance since August 3, 2020, a span of 1,030 total days.

  • Soroka suffered a torn right achilles in his start on August 3, 2020 vs. the Mets and missed the remainder of that season…He again suffered a tear of the same achilles in June of 2021…He returned to the mound for the first time since the initial injury on August 16 of last season, and made six starts in the minors last year.
  • In eight starts with Triple-A Gwinnett this season, he is 1-2 with a 4.33 ERA (17 ER/35.1 IP), and has allowed just four hits and two runs over his last 10.2 innings.
  • Soroka is 15-6 with a 2.86 ERA (68 ER/214.0 IP) in 37 career starts for Atlanta, including a 13-4 record and a 2.68 ERA in 2019, his only full season with the Braves…He earned N.L. All-Star honors that year, and finished second in Rookie of the Year balloting.
