Boxing Preview: Claressa Shields (13-0-0, 2 KOs) vs Maricela Cornejo (16-5, 6 KOs)

Boxing superstar and two-division undisputed world champion Claressa Shields has raised the stakes substantially and will now face no. 1 ranked middleweight contender Maricela “La Diva” Cornejo in the main event of action on Saturday, June 3 from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit and streamed live on DAZN in the U.S. and Canada. Hanna Gabriels was originally slated to rematch Shields. However, based on the results of a May 2, 2023 VADA test done as part of the WBC Clean Boxer Program, promoter Salita Promotions made the change.

Boxing’s G.W.O.A.T. and Michigan’s own Shields will live up to her promise to bring big-time boxing back to Detroit by stepping up to face the WBC, WBO and IBF no. 1 ranked contender Cornejo in the first-ever boxing event at Little Caesars Arena. The two highly-competitive combatants had strong statements about their June 3 showdown.

“I told my team to get me the best,’ said Undisputed Middleweight Champion Claressa Shields. “Cornejo is a tall, tough Mexican full of pride who’s in great shape and wants to beat me. She’s ranked number one. That’s exactly what I want for my Detroit homecoming and for my fans around the world. I’m looking forward to a great performance on June 3.”

SHIELDS VS. CORNEJO START TIME
Date: Saturday, June 3
Main card: 9 p.m. EDT / 2 a.m. BST (Sunday)
Main event ringwalks (approx): TBC
DAZN holds the rights to broadcast the fight in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand – Watch LIVE on DAZN
The fight takes place at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
The main card starts at 9 p.m. EDT / 2 a.m. BST (Sunday). The exact fight times are yet to be confirmed.

“When Shields faced a Mexican in the cage, she lost. Now she will lose to a Mexican in the boxing ring,” said Cornejo. “I just finished an amazing fight camp and am in the best, strongest physical and mental shape of my life. My team in Vegas has sharpened me like a knife for this moment. On June 3, I will become Undisputed Champion!”

A two-time Olympic gold medalist throughout her storied amateur career, the 28-year-old Shields (13-0, 2 KOs) avenged her only amateur defeat last October when she traveled to the U.K. to win the WBO Middleweight Title from Savannah Marshall via unanimous decision. The Flint-native’s last fight in her home state of Michigan came in March 2021 as she bested Marie Eve Dicaire to become undisputed super welterweight world champion, her second undisputed distinction after originally unifying all the middleweight titles with a 2019 victory over then unbeaten Christina Hammer.

A native of Washington who now trains in Las Vegas under the tutelage of renowned trainer Ismael Salas, Cornejo (16-5, 6 KOs) enters this fight having won three-straight contests. She most recently fought in March as she stopped Sheila Cunha in the first round. The 36-year-old has previously challenged for world titles at middleweight and super middleweight, including a pair of close decision losses to undisputed super middleweight champion Franchon Crews Dezurn in 2018 and 2019. Cornejo’s first world title opportunity came in just her sixth professional outing, as she dropped a razor thin split-decision to Kali Reis in April 2016.

“Claressa’s goal has always been to fight the best, and we left no stone unturned in making sure we deliver the highest available contender in the undisputed multi organization no. 1 world-rated middleweight Marcelo Cornejo,” said Dmitriy Salita, President of Salita Promotions. “Fans watching the fight live on DAZN and those present for the comeback of big-time boxing in Detroit at Little Caesars Arena will witness the highest level of professional boxing between two hungry fighters fighting for the Undisputed Middleweight World Crown.”

MLS Preview: New York Red Bulls (3-5-7) at Inter Miami FC (5-9-0)

0

There has never been a draw between Inter Miami FC and the New York Red Bulls with New York winning four times and Inter Miami FC winning twice. Inter Miami FC scored four goals in its two wins (two goals in each match) but managed just two total goals in the four defeats.

Inter Miami FC has lost three straight league matches following a 1-0 defeat at CF Montreal Impact on Saturday. This marks the eighth time Inter Miami FC has lost at least three straight MLS matches, the most such losing streaks by any team since Inter Miami FC joined the league in 2020.

The New York Red Bulls haven’t won any of their last 10 away matches (D4 L6), the club’s longest winless run away from home in regular season play since 2011 (11 straight). The New York Red Bulls have managed just four goals in those 10 matches, not scoring more than one in any match.

Inter Miami FC is one of two teams (CF Montreal Impact) that has not drawn a match this season. Further, the opening goal in all 14 of Inter Miami FC’s matches has been decisive, with the Herons not dropping any points from winning positions and not gaining any points from losing positions all season.

The New York Red Bulls faced eight shots against the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, losing, 1-0, on the Sounders’ only shot on target of the match. The New York Red Bulls have faced just 103 shots this season (6.9 per match), while no other team since 2010 allowed fewer than 123 shots in its first 15 matches of a season.

MLS Preview: CF Montreal Impact (6-8-0) at D.C. United (5-6-4)

0

D. C. United defeated the CF Montreal Impact, 1-0, on April 15 on a Lewis O’Brien goal 11 seconds into the second half. D. C. United has won multiple matches against CF Montreal Impact in a single season just once before, winning two of three meetings in the 2015 season (L1).

D. C. United has won three of its last four home matches in all competitions (D1), keeping clean sheets in all three wins. D. C. United had recorded just two wins and kept two clean sheets in its previous 16 home matches in all competitions dating back to last May (D5 L9).

CF Montreal Impact has won five of its first six home matches this season (L1), though it’s lost seven of its first eight on the road (W1). CF Montreal has been outscored, 19-3, on the road this season, only the Miami Fusion in 1998 (- 18) had a worse goal difference after eight away games of a season.

Christian Benteke has scored in two straight matches, the third time already this season that Benteke has scored in consecutive appearances. Benteke is the only player this season to record three separate goal-scoring streaks of two or more matches, though he’s yet to score in three straight appearances.

No team has attempted fewer shots in the box this season than CF Montreal Impact (85), though the CF Montreal Impact is one of three teams (FC Dallas, Chicago Fire)without a goal from outside the box this season.

NWSL Challenge Cup Preview: Angel City FC (0-1-1) at Portland Thorns FC (0-1-0)

Providence Park | Portland, Oregon – Wednesday, May 31 at 10:30 PM ET

Players to watch:

Portland midfielder Sam Coffey assisted Portland’s equalizing goal against San Diego on Saturday, her third assist in the last two matches, equaling her total from her first 32 games in all NWSL competitions. Only teammate Sophia Smith (5) has more assists in all NWSL competitions than Coffey (4) this season.

Angel City has yet to score in this year’s competition through two games played, but forwards Katie Johnsonand Alyssa Thompson, both of whom have made a goalscoring impact in the regular season, lead the team in shots on target (2) with Johnson also leading the team in total shots. And though DiDi Haracic is typically first choice for the first team in the regular season, goalkeeper Brittany Isenhour has earned both appearances between the sticks to date and is likely to continue that trend on Wednesday night.

Match facts: Portland Thorns FC welcomes Angel City FC for Wednesday’s nightcap fixture with the Thorns looking to bounce back from an opening loss in the competition, while Angel City is still searching for its first Challenge Cup win in its third match this season.

After losing only two of their first 14 matches in the Challenge Cup (W6 D6), Portland has lost three of its last four matches in the competition (W1), including the last two in a row. The Thorns have suffered only one home defeat in the competition, however (W4 D1). Portland is in a good vein of form though, having won or drawn five of their last six in the regular season (W2 D3), including a 3-3 draw against Angel City on April 29.

Angel City has won only one of its eight all-time Challenge Cup matches (D2 L5), though that win came against Portland, 1-0, at home last April. Angel City earned its first away point in the Challenge Cup in its last match in the tournament though, a scoreless draw at OL Reign. Angel City has attempted fewer than 10 shots in four of its five matches in May in all competitions, including the last three in a row, averaging 8.6 shots per match in that time. Angel City was held under 10 shots just once in its previous 10 matches dating back to last September, averaging 14.8 attempts per match over that time.

That 3-3 draw between Portland and Angel City came in dramatic fashion with Thorns goalkeeper Bella Bixby scoring the equalizer in the seventh minute of stoppage time. The Thorns had conceded only two goals in their first four meetings with Angel City (in all competitions) before allowing three in the last meeting.

NWSL Challenge Cup Preview: OL Reign (1-0-1) at San Diego Wave FC (1-0-0)

Snapdragon Stadium | San Diego, California – Wednesday, May 31 at 10:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

San Diego forward Alex Morgan has been involved in five of the 10 goals San Diego has scored in its NWSL Challenge Cup history (4 goals, 1 assist). Morgan scored both of San Diego’s goals in its matches against OL Reign in last year’s edition of tournament. Morgan’s five regular season goals also have her tied for the top of the league in scoring alongside three other players, with forwards Jaedyn Shaw (3) and Sofia Jakobsson (2) the only other multi-goal scorers on the year so far.

OL Reign attacker Megan Rapinoe delivered three assists in OL Reign’s win over Angel City on Saturday, becoming the fifth player in NWSL history to record a three-assist game (all comps). San Diego is the only opponent Rapinoe has never recorded a goal contribution against in her NWSL career. The quarter of forwards Bethany BalcerVeronica Latsko, and Jordyn Huitema as well as midfielder Jess Fishlock lead the team in regular season goals scored with three each.

Match facts: San Diego plays its second Challenge Cup match of the season when it faces OL Reign at Snapdragon Stadium, looking to build on a one-goal win over Portland in mid-April while the Reign have won one and drawn one in back-to-back matches against Angel City.

San Diego opened its 2023 Challenge Cup with 1-0 home win over Portland on April 19. The Wave have lost only one of their four home Challenge Cup matches (W2 D1) while they’re managed just one point from three away matches in the tournament. Riding a good amount of momentum since that match, San Diego is on a three match unbeaten run entering Wednesday night (W2 D1) after two straight losses against Orlando and Washington temporarily chopped its waters.

OL Reign is unbeaten in 11 straight Challenge Cup matches (W7 D4, including a penalty shoot-out loss in last year’s semifinal), tied with North Carolina for the longest unbeaten run in competition history. The Reign have won four of their five road matches during that time, including a 2-0 win at Angel City in April.

OL Reign is unbeaten against San Diego in all NWSL competitions (W3 D2) including a 1-0 home win in April in the first meeting between the sides this year. The Reign have won all three of their home matches against the Wave while both meetings in San Diego have ended in draws.

NWSL Challenge Cup Preview: Racing Louisville FC (1-0-0) at Chicago Red Stars (0-1-0)

SeatGeek Stadium | Bridgeview, Illinois – Wednesday, May 31 at 8:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

Chicago’s Casey Krueger set up Yuki Nagasato for the Red Stars’ only goal in their 1-0 win over Orlando in league play on Saturday. Three of Krueger’s five assists in all NWSL competitions since the start of the 2019 season have set up goals for Nagasato. Nagasato’s two goals now have her tied for the team’s lead alongside forwards Penelope Hocking and Ella Stevens

Racing Louisville midfielder Savannah DeMelo is in the middle of a breakout campaign and scored her first career brace in Racing’s opening match of this year’s Challenge Cup. It is the still the only multi-goal performance in a Challenge Cup match so far this year. DeMelo also leads the team in regular season goals with three in eight games as the goalscoring is evenly spread for Racing, with eight different players scoring for the home side.

Match facts: The Chicago Red Stars welcome Racing Louisville FC to SeatGeek Stadium on Wednesday night for their second Challenge Cup match of the year, looking now to reverse fortunes after a 2-0 loss in Houston to the Dash in early May. Meanwhile, Racing’s start to the Challenge Cup was a successful one, earning a 3-2 win over Kansas City to enter into Wednesday’s match second in the Central Division only on goal differential and with a game in hand on the leaders the Current.

The Red Stars have managed just two wins in 11 Challenge Cup matches since 2021 (D4 L5) after reaching the final of the inaugural tournament in 2020. Chicago opened the 2023 edition of the tournament with a defeat but has never had the same result in consecutive Challenge Cup matches within a single year. Working in Chicago’s favor is their most recent 1-0 win over Orlando in the regular season, which gives them slight momentum after a six-game winless run that saw them collect just one point across that run.

On the other side, Racing Louisville opened its 2023 Challenge Cup with a 3-2 win over Kansas City on May 17. Louisville has lost only one of its last five Challenge Cup matches (W2 D2) with both draws in that time coming against the Red Stars. Louisville is entering off a 2-1 loss against North Carolina in the regular season over the weekend, though, ending a three-game unbeaten run spanning back to a 3-0 win over Chicago on May 12.

Racing Louisville and Chicago have each won two of the seven all-time meetings (3 draws) with both Challenge Cup matches last year ending in draws. Both teams have won once at home and once away against the other.

MLS Preview: Colorado Rapids (2-7-6) at Columbus Crew SC (5-6-3)

0

Including playoffs, the Colorado Rapids have lost only two of their last 11 matches against the Columbus Crew SC (W6 D3) dating back to August 2011. The Colorado Rapids have scored at least once in 16 straight meetings with the Columbus Crew SC (including playoffs) dating back to 2010, tied for the longest active streak in MLS (New England Revolution vs Orlando City SC – 16 straight).

The Columbus Crew SC has lost all three straight matches in all competitions, though all three of those matches were played on the road. Dating back to early August last season, the Columbus Crew SC have lost only one of their last 14 home matches in all competitions (W8 D5).

The Colorado Rapids have lost five straight matches in all competitions following a 1-0 defeat to FC Cincinnati on Saturday. The last time Colorado had a losing streak this long was in March-May 2019, a run of eight straight losses that saw then change coaches after the sixth defeat.

Cucho Hernandez set the Columbus Crew SC’s only goal on Sunday and has now recorded an assist in four straight MLS matches (5 total), the first Columbus Crew SC player to do so since Federico Higuain in 2017. The last Columbus Crew SC player to record an assist in five straight games in a single season was Guillermo Barros Schelotto in June 2007.

The Colorado Rapids faced 16 shots in its loss to FC Cincinnati on Saturday, the eighth time this season the Colorado Rapids have faced 15 or more shots in a match, more than any other team in 2023. Colorado has faced an MLS-high 14.7 shots per match this season.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS NOTES:

FABULOUS FIFTH: The Dodgers kicked off their six-game homestand (1-0) in style last night, cruising to a 6-1 victory over the Washington Nationals thanks to a six-run fifth inning, highlighted by J.D. Martinez’s 11th home run of the season, a two-out, three-run shot off Trevor Williams. Rookie right-hander Bobby Miller turned in his second straight solid performance, giving up just one run on four hits in 6.0 innings. The Dodgers hold a 1.5 games lead in the National League West division over Arizona and are 4.5 games ahead of the third-place San Francisco Giants. Tonight, the Boys in Blue play the middle contest of a three-game series with the Nats as they try to win their fifth consecutive series at Dodger Stadium. Following tomorrow’s series finale and then an off day on Thursday, the Dodgers welcome in the New York Yankees for a three-game weekend series (June 2-4), culminating with ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball to close out the stand. Los Angeles (.600) owns the best record in the National League and the fourth-best mark in the big leagues, trailing Tampa Bay (.696), Texas (.642) and Baltimore (.630). The Dodgers have the best home record in the National League (18-7, .720) and have won 12 of their last 13 contests at the Ravine.
The Dodgers have beaten Washington in 11 of their last 14 meetings since the start of the 2021 campaign. In that time, Los Angeles is 5-2 vs. the Nationals at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers are 7-2 vs. the National League East in 2023.

FREDDIE AND J.D. SHOW: The Dodgers collected just six hits last night, with four of them coming in the decisive fifth frame, that saw the Boys in Blue bat around and plate all six runs. Following a sacrifice fly from James Outman, Freddie Freeman laced a two-run double and J.D. Martinez followed with a three-run homer, putting the game out of reach, thanks to a stellar start from Bobby Miller and 1.0 scoreless inning apiece from Victor González, Justin Bruihl and Shelby Miller. David Peralta chipped in two hits for the Dodgers, who lead the National League in runs per game (5.53), runs scored (304), home runs (90, T-1st), extra-base hits (206) and walks (236). Last night, Bobby Miller became the first Dodger pitcher to win his first two career starts since José De León did so on Sept. 4 and 12, 2016.

LOCKED IN: Dodger designated hitter J.D. Martinez went 1-for-4 and put the game out of reach with a three-run homer in the fifth inning last night. Martinez has been on fire since returning from the injured list on May 12 hitting safely in 15 of 16 games while batting .309 (21-for-68) with three doubles, seven homers and 21 RBI during that span. In his career, May has been his most productive month, clubbing 60 homers and driving in 165 runners while recording an .894 OPS. His current 13-game hitting streak is the second longest by a Dodger this season and five shy of matching his career best (April 20-May 17, 2022).

THE GLUE: Dodger catcher Will Smith went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored last night and is now batting .309 (25-for-81) with three doubles and four homers in the month of May with a .920 OPS. The Dodgers are 25-12 (.676) when Smith has appeared in a game and 25-9 (.735) when he starts.

FABULOUS FREDDIE: Dodger first baseman Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to 18 games last night, ripping a two-run double in the
fifth inning. Freeman is batting .441 (31-for-72) with four homers, 11 doubles, one triple, 20 RBI and 16 runs scored during the streak and has hit safely in all but two games in May. Freeman ranks third in the Major Leagues with 45 runs scored, trailing just Ronald Acuña Jr. (48) and Marcus Semien (47). He clubbed his 300th career homer on May 18 and became just the fifth player in franchise history to accomplish that feat in a Dodger uniform. Last night, Freeman clubbed his 17th double of the month, setting a franchise record for doubles in any calendar month. The previous record was held by Babe Herman, who hit 16 doubles in July of 1930. Freeman leads the Major Leagues with 23 doubles, 33 extra-base hits and 125 total bases while ranking second in hits (73) and fourth in batting average (.333). His 300th career homer came in grand fashion, as he clubbed his fourth career Grand Slam to achieve the milestone. Freeman became just the second person in MLB history to hit No. 300 for a Grand Slam, joining Ruben Sierra, who clubbed his 300th on August 28, 2004, for the Yankees at Toronto. His 18-game hitting streak is tied for the third longest of his career and his longest streak as a Dodger: Team Games Started Ended
