WNBA Preview: Dallas Wings (3-1) at Washington Mystics (2-2)

In Arike Ogunbowale, the Dallas Wings have a high-usage, high-volume scorer who gives them a chance in any game.

The difference between this year and past seasons is that the Wings have more capable scorers around her, which is why they’re off to a 3-1 start heading into Friday night’s road game against the Washington Mystics.

Ogunbowale is pumping in 25.3 points per game despite making only 37.4 percent of her field goals. However, opponents have to account for players like Satou Sabally and Natasha Howard. Sabally is averaging 22.3 points and 9.0 rebounds, while Howard is chipping in 18.8 and 8.3, respectively.

It was Howard’s turn to shine Tuesday night in a 94-89 home win over Minnesota. She fired in a game-high 25 points, canning 11 of 15 attempts from the field, and contributed seven rebounds.

Washington (2-2) hasn’t played in a week. The Mystics bounced back from consecutive losses to Connecticut with a 71-69 win on May 26 at Chicago as Elena Delle Donne drained a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 22.4 seconds left to snap a 66-66 tie.

Delle Donne scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting in her first game since being fined by the WNBA for criticizing the officiating during an 80-74 defeat on May 21 at Connecticut.

The Mystics might get former All-WNBA Second Team pick Myisha Hines-Allen back on the floor for the first time this year. The veteran forward had knee surgery after last season and could play either Friday night or Saturday night when the team hosts Minnesota.

The Mystics won two of three matchups with the Wings last year.

WNBA Preview: New York Liberty (3-1) at Chicago Sky (3-2)

Before the teams meet again on Sunday in New York, the New York Liberty will be looking to extend their winning streak to four games when they visit the Chicago Sky on Friday.

After defeating the host Seattle Storm 86-78 on Tuesday, the Liberty (3-1) have won their last three games by an average of 13.7 points. The Washington Mystics defeated New York on the road in the season’s opening game, 80-64.

Chicago (3-2) has dropped two of its beyond three games after a 83-65 misfortune to the host Atlanta Dream on Tuesday.

Breanna Stewart leads New York and averages team highs of 25.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.8 steals, and 1.8 blocks per game. Sabrina Ionescu averages 16.0 points and 7.3 rebounds. Courtney Vandersloot contributes a team-high 9.3 points and 8.8 assists per game.

Stewart had a fabulous game against the Tempest, the group she prompted WNBA titles in 2018 and 2020 preceding joining the Freedom as one of the greatest free-specialist signings in association history in February. In the game against her former team, the two-time finals MVP and 2018 league MVP scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Ionescu scored 20 points and made six 3-pointers, and Vandersloot had 11 assists but did not score.

The Liberty anticipate matching the Sky’s performance. Before signing with New York as a free agent in February, Vandersloot spent her first twelve seasons with the Sky, leading them to their first title in 2021.

In the meantime, the Sky’s strong start to the season was ruined by a loss to Atlanta, which led by as many as 22 points in the second half and 40-25 at halftime.

The Sky were led by Dana Evans, who came off the bench to score 11 points, a team-high. Kahleah Copper, who averages 14.6 points per game, scored 10, and Marina Mabrey, who scores 14.3, also scored 10.

Musgrove set for 6th career start vs. Marlins
30-year-old right-hander Joe Musgrove is slated for his 7th start of the season, his 6th career start vs. the Marlins and his 4th road start of the season…it’s technically his 5th start away from Petco Park, as his 2nd start of the season came during the Mexico City Series at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú vs. San Francisco, and San Diego was the home team…he has 4 consecutive quality starts vs. the Marlins, which all have come as a member of the Padres, and he has not issued more than 1 walk or 1 HR in any start vs. the Marlins.

Breaking bad
Yu Darvish (2,758 rpm) and Joe Musgrove (2,724 rpm) have the 2nd and 3rd-highest spin rates on breaking balls, respectively, among all NL pitchers since the start of last season (min. 1,250 pitches)…they trail only ATL’s Charlie Morton (3,068 rpm).
