The San Antonio Spurs will aim to win consecutive games for just the second time this season and reach the .500 mark when they host the struggling Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.
The Spurs, who are in the fourth game of a five-game homestand, are coming off a dominant 116-96 victory over Sacramento on Monday. Victor Wembanyama led the charge with a 34-point, 14-rebound double-double, helping San Antonio pull away after a five-point halftime lead.
Wembanyama’s performance placed him among an elite group of six players in league history to accumulate at least 1,700 points, 800 rebounds, and 300 assists in their first 82 games, which equates to a full NBA regular season.
Wembanyama shot 6 of 12 from beyond the arc on Monday, as the Spurs matched a franchise record with 22 three-pointers. San Antonio has now won two of its past three games.
Spurs interim coach Mitch Johnson noted that Wembanyama’s success is a result of his consistent practice efforts. Wembanyama is averaging 19.7 points and 10.5 rebounds per game this season.
Julian Champagnie contributed 13 points for the Spurs, while Devin Vassell and Chris Paul each scored 12 points, Keldon Johnson added 11, and Harrison Barnes and Stephon Castle chipped in 10 points each. Paul also dished out 11 assists in the win.
The Wizards enter the game with a five-game losing streak, having most recently fallen 107-92 to Houston on Monday. Washington has lost each game during this skid by at least 13 points, with an average margin of nearly 20 points.
The Wizards’ last victory came against Atlanta on October 30. Kyle Kuzma led Washington with 18 points on Monday in his return after missing five games with a groin strain. Corey Kispert added 12 points, while Jordan Poole and Bilal Coulibaly each scored 11, and Carlton Carrington and Jonas Valanciunas contributed 10 points apiece. The Wizards shot 40.9 percent from the field.
Despite the rough stretch, Washington coach Brian Keefe emphasized that his team is making opponents work hard to get their shots. San Antonio has not posted a home win over Washington since the 2021-22 season.
