NBA Preview: Sacramento Kings (6-4) vs San Antonio Spurs (4-6)

The San Antonio Spurs will continue integrating the return of one of their key players when they host the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

The Spurs are in the midst of a five-game homestand, having split the first two games with a win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday and a narrow 111-110 loss to the Utah Jazz on Saturday.

On Saturday, Victor Wembanyama contributed 24 points and 16 rebounds but was called for a crucial offensive foul late in the game. Stephon Castle scored a career-high 23 points in his third start, while Devin Vassell added 21 points, Keldon Johnson chipped in 14, and Harrison Barnes tallied 10 points in the loss.

Vassell’s performance came in his first game of the season after missing more than seven months with a broken foot.  The Spurs have split their last four games and will face the Kings for the first time this season. The Kings arrived in San Antonio early Monday morning after a 127-118 overtime win in Phoenix on Sunday.

DeMar DeRozan led the Kings with 34 points, while three other starters—De’Aaron Fox (21 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists), Domantas Sabonis (20 points, 12 rebounds), and Keegan Murray (14 points, 14 rebounds)—recorded double-doubles. Kevin Huerter added 17 points for Sacramento.

The Kings have won three of their last four games.  While DeRozan garners much of the attention, Huerter—who joined the Kings from Atlanta in July 2022—has also been a vital player. The 6-foot-7 guard underwent a 6.5-month recovery after season-ending surgery last April to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Sacramento’s standout sixth man, Malik Monk, left Sunday’s game early in the second quarter after twisting his ankle when he stepped on the foot of Suns center Mason Plumlee. Monk did not return to the game, and his status for Monday’s contest remains uncertain until game time.
