When the Houston Rockets took their shot in the national spotlight during the NBA Cup semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder two weeks ago, poor shooting plagued them. However, they have since bounced back, capping a 3-0 road trip with a 128-111 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday, extending their winning streak to four games.

Rockets’ Resurgence

Houston’s offense has found its rhythm, shooting 48.1 percent during their winning streak, including an impressive 57.4 percent inside the 3-point arc. Known as one of the league’s best defensive teams, the Rockets’ improved offensive efficiency has been key to their recent success.

The Rockets won the final two games of their road trip without forwards Dillon Brooks (ankle) and Tari Eason (leg), whose statuses for the upcoming game against the Minnesota Timberwolves remain uncertain. Despite missing these defensive stalwarts, Houston has showcased its depth, with the backcourt duo of Jalen Green and Fred VanVleet combining for 55 points against the Pelicans. Reserve Cam Whitmore also contributed a career-high 27 points.

Timberwolves’ Struggles

The Minnesota Timberwolves appeared to be firing on all cylinders with six wins in seven games before a showdown with the New York Knicks on December 19. However, a 26-point loss to the Knicks led to a three-game skid, which was only recently snapped with a 105-99 home victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Christmas.

Minnesota made a bold move by trading Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks after reaching the Western Conference finals last season. The additions of Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo have taken time to mesh with the team. Anthony Edwards remains the focal point for the Timberwolves, and his late-game heroics against the Mavericks helped prevent a massive collapse after Dallas trimmed a 28-point deficit to a single possession.

Despite Edwards’ influence, Minnesota remains a bottom-10 offense, struggling to find consistent form.

Key Matchup

Houston’s improved offense and deep roster will be tested against a Timberwolves team looking to regain stability. The Rockets’ ability to maintain their scoring efficiency and defensive prowess will be crucial, while the Timberwolves will need to find a way to overcome their offensive challenges and integrate their new additions effectively.
