Memphis Grizzlies’ 7-foot-4 center Zach Edey appears to be finding his rhythm several weeks into his NBA career.
The team’s first-round pick in the 2024 draft looked every bit worthy of his ninth overall selection during Monday’s 106-104 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. Edey, a two-time national player of the year at Purdue, tallied a season-high 25 points and 12 rebounds in 29 minutes, showcasing his comfort and strength in the paint.
As the Grizzlies prepare to host the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, coach Taylor Jenkins will be keen to see how Edey handles a matchup against one of the league’s best low post players, Anthony Davis. Davis is averaging 32.6 points and 11.6 rebounds per game while shooting 57.1 percent from the floor.
Jenkins was encouraged by Edey’s performance against Brooklyn, which showed the potential for a dominating presence in the paint, filling the void left by Steven Adams’ departure last season.
Davis has been dealing with a foot injury, making his status for Wednesday’s game uncertain. Lakers coach J.J. Redick has centered the offense around Davis, aiming to get him touches each possession.
LeBron James, who turns 40 in December, continues to contribute at a high level, with 20 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds in Monday’s game against the Detroit Pistons.
However, the Lakers are struggling, having lost three of their last four games after a strong start that included wins over playoff teams Minnesota, Phoenix, and Sacramento. On Monday, the Lakers fell 115-103 to Detroit, allowing 67 points in the first half.
To address their recent defensive issues, Redick might try a different approach. Cam Reddish, who played his first rotation minutes of the season against the Pistons, could continue to see action due to his defensive skills and athleticism.
