The Orlando Magic and Indiana Pacers, both aiming for title contention this season, face off on Monday. The Pacers, coming off a tough loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, squandered a five-point lead in the final moments of regulation on Sunday before Tyrese Haliburton forced overtime with a 3-pointer. Poor free-throw shooting, sloppy play with 20 turnovers, and allowing 20 offensive rebounds led to their 118-114 defeat.
This was Indiana’s second consecutive loss, following a 123-98 defeat in New York on Friday. The Pacers have accumulated 51 turnovers in their first three games, a stark contrast to their 12.3 turnovers per game average last season. Despite leading the NBA in assists last season, Haliburton has only managed 11 assists in the first three games.
The Magic, also seeking to bounce back from a recent loss, started the season strong with dominant wins over the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets but suffered a 124-111 setback at Memphis on Saturday. Franz Wagner scored 23 points and Jalen Suggs added 21, but the team couldn’t recover from a 26-point first-half deficit.
Coach Mosley has emphasized the importance of creating turnovers and converting them into fastbreak opportunities. Last season, Orlando ranked third in turnover generation, forcing 14.4 per game. Wagner and Suggs each averaged more than a steal per game, while Paolo Banchero was also effective in generating steals.
Banchero, Orlando’s emerging star, started the season with 33 points and 11 rebounds against Miami, followed by 15 points, nine assists, and six rebounds in the win over Brooklyn. However, he struggled against Memphis, scoring 16 points on 4-of-12 shooting from the floor and 7-of-13 from the free-throw line.
Both teams will look to address their weaknesses and capitalize on their strengths in this matchup, aiming to secure a win and improve their standings early in the season.
