The Mavericks were in the midst of a three-game losing streak when they last faced the Pelicans on January 15. Since then, Dallas has posted a 3-3 record, including two wins against the NBA-leading Oklahoma City. The Pelicans, on the other hand, were enjoying a four-game winning streak that has now turned into three consecutive losses.

Dallas was without Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving for their previous game in New Orleans, but Irving has since returned. In Monday night’s game against visiting Washington, Irving scored 13 points while Klay Thompson made 7 of 12 3-pointers, leading the Mavericks with 23 points in a 130-108 victory. The Mavericks shot 53.3 percent from the floor, made 20 of 45 3-point attempts (44.4 percent), and recorded 39 assists on 49 field goals.

Thompson tied Doncic’s franchise record for 3-pointers made in one quarter by shooting 7-of-10 from beyond the arc, helping Dallas build a 42-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Mavericks secured their first double-digit victory since defeating the visiting Lakers 118-97 on January 7. They now begin a five-game road trip on Wednesday, having lost six of their last seven away games.

New Orleans completed a winless three-game road trip with a 113-104 loss at Toronto on Monday. The losses, including at Memphis and Charlotte, came by an average of 17.7 points. The Pelicans shot 43.8 percent from the floor and just 6-of-28 from beyond the arc against Toronto, with the 21.4 percent rate from deep marking their second-lowest of the season.

Forward Zion Williamson was a bright spot for New Orleans, making 13 of 18 field-goal attempts and scoring 31 points. The Pelicans, however, hit only 20 of 30 free throws, with Williamson and CJ McCollum struggling from the line.

The Mavericks also defeated the Pelicans 132-91 on November 19 in Dallas. The season series will conclude with a game in Dallas on February 21.
