MLB 2024 NLCS Game 4 Notes: Los Angeles Dodgers (2-1) vs New York Mets (1-2)

Game Four
Since the LCS moved to its current seven-game format in 1985,the winner of the fourth game of the NLCS has advanced to the Fall Classic 24 times (63.2%) including each of the last three years (AZ in 2023, PHI in 2022, ATL in 2021) and in nine of the last 11 years. The Dodgers hold a 2-1 series lead and historically, the team with a 2-1 lead has won the NLCS 27 times (65.9%); and won any best-of-seven Postseason series 106 times (70.2%).

  • In 48 previous NLCS matchups (best-of-7 or best-of-5), the team winning Game 4 has gone on to win the series 33 times (68.8%). The Dodgers are 22-25 all-time in Game 4 of a Postseason Series, including 15-20 in Game 4 of a best-of-seven series overall, and 6-9 in Game 4 of the NLCS.

The Muncy Show
After a homer-less Game 1, both teams hit a longball in Game 2 and the Dodgers continue the homer-fest with a trio of blasts last night. Max Muncy closed out the scoring with a solo shot in the eighth inning, marking his 13th career Postseason homer. He is now tied with Corey Seager and Justin Turner for the most Postseason homers in Dodgers history.

Additionally, Muncy reached base five times in last night’s contest, becoming the fourth Dodger to reach base five times in a Postseason game, joining Will Smith (G3 NLDS, 2020); Manny Ramírez (G4 NLCS, 2008); and Hall of Famer Gil Hodges (G2 WS, 1956). He is the first player to reach base five times in an LCS (AL or NL) since David Murphy in Game 6 of the 2011 ALCS and the first to do it in the NLCS since Ramírez in 2008.

Since his home run in the fifth inning of Game 2, Muncy has reached base in eight consecutive plate appearances. Those plate appearances include: home run; walk; walk; walk; single; walk; walk; home run. His .692 on-base percentage and 1.078 OPS this Postseason are the highest marks on the Dodgers and his .500 batting average (4-for-8) is the Dodgers’ highest mark in the NLCS.

Postseason Performance
Yamamoto has made two starts this Postseason, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout in Game 1 of the Division Series against San Diego on October 5th. He bounced back to earn the win in Game 5 of the NLDS on October 11th, throwing 5.0 shutout innings, permitting two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Postseason Performance
Quintana has made two starts this Postseason, allowing four hits in 6.0 scoreless innings with one walk and five strikeouts in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series against Milwaukee on October 3rd. He followed up the performance with 5.0 innings on October 9th against Philadelphia in Game 4 of the NLDS as he struck out six and allowed an unearned run but did not factor into the decision. He has been the starting pitcher in both of the Mets’ series clinching games this Postseason.

He last faced the Dodgers on May 28th, taking the loss as he allowed three runs on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts across 6.0 innings. He has previously faced the Dodgers twice in the NLCS, starting Games 1 and 5 of the 2017 matchup as a member o the Cubs. Did not factor into the decision in Game 1, but was tagged with the loss in Game 5.

    Severino is pitching at Citi Field for the 16th time this season after making 15 regular season starts at home. Overall he is 5-5 with a 3.44 ERA (34 ER/89.0 IP) in Queens this season. In the Mets Postseason push, he went 4-1 with a 0.90 ERA (3 ER/30.0 IP) in five starts beginning on August 31st. During the stretch he had three consecutive scoreless starts (9/7, 9/13 and 9/18) and finished the year with a season-high nine strikeouts on September 28th at Milwaukee.
