MLB 2024 ALCS Postgame Notes Game 3

CLEVELAND GUARDIANS

With tonight’s victory Guardians cut New York’s series lead to 2-1 in the 2024 American League Championship series and are 4-4 overall in the 2024 Postseason.

  • Teams that win Game 3 after falling behind 2-0 in a seven-game Postseason series have gone on to win the series 14 of 51 times (27.5%), including four of 21 times (19%) in an LCS…The only A.L. team to win a seven-game ALCS after going down 0-2 and winning Game 3 was the 1985 Royals (vs. Toronto).
  • Cleveland now has a five-game win streak in ALCS Game 3’s (since 1997).
  • Guardians have won seven of last eight Postseason extra-inning games since 1998 ALCS Game 2 at NYY…Cleveland’s .688 (11-5) overall winning percentage in Postseason extra-inning games is the highest in MLB (min. 10 games).

    MATTHEW BOYD: Did not factor in decision after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing one earned run on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
  • Only run allowed came on an RBI single by Jose Trevino in the 2nd inning, which snapped his 7.2 inning scoreless streak to begin his Postseason career.
  • First Cleveland starter to allow one-or-fewer runs in any three-start span in the Postseason.
    JHONKENSY NOEL: Tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the 9th inning with a two-out, pinch-hit home run to left field.
  • Second game-tying Postseason HR in the 9th inning (or later) in Cleveland history, following Albert Belle in 1995 ALDS Game 1 vs. Boston (solo HR in 11th inning).
  • First pinch-hit, game-tying HR in the 9th inning (or later) of a Postseason game since Raúl Ibañez for the Yankees in Game 3 of the 2012 ALDS vs. Baltimore.
  • Sixth pinch-hit, game-tying HR with two outs in the 9th inning (or later) in Postseason history and first since Mike Lamb for Houston in Game 1 of the 2004 NLCS at St. Louis.
  • The homer was his first Aug. 30 vs. Pittsburgh, snapping a drought of 76 plate appearances without a HR…First extra-base hit since Sept. 13, snapping a drought
    of 41 plate appearances without an XBH.
    DAVID FRY: Hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Guardians a 7-5 victory.
  • Third Postseason walk-off HR in Guardians history: Tony Peña (1995 ALDS Game 1 vs. BOS) and Oscar Gonzalez (2022 AL Wild Card Series Game 2 vs. TB).
    EMMANUEL CLASE: Charged with first career Postseason blown save after allowing back-to-back home runs to Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton in the 8th inning…Had converted his last 36 save opportunities since May 20 between the regular season and Postseason…First time allowing multiple HR in any game in career (regular season or Postseason).
    KYLE MANZARDO: Recorded his first career Postseason HR with a go-ahead 2-run homer in the 3rd inning to Cleveland a 2-1 lead (Guardians first lead of the series).
  • Became the first rookie to hit a go-ahead home run for Cleveland in the Postseason since Steven Kwan in 2022 ALDS Game 1 (off Gerrit Cole for a 1-0 lead in 3rd inning).
  • Including the regular season, all six of his Major League home runs have come at Progressive Field.
    JOSÉ RAMÍREZ: Doubled with two outs in the 5th inning, marking his ninth career Postseason double…Ties Sandy Alomar Jr. (9 doubles) for the most in Cleveland Postseason history.
    STEVEN KWAN: His walk leading off the bottom of the 1st inning extended his Postseason on-base streak to 14 games, which tied Jim Thome (1997-98) for the longest in Cleveland history.
    ANDRÉS GIMÉNEZ: Hit an RBI single in the 6th inning to extend the Guardians lead to 3-1…The hit snapped Guardians 0-for-15 stretch with RISP, dating back to Steven Kwan’s single in the 8th inning of Game 1 at NYY.
    BRAYAN ROCCHIO: Singled in the 3rd inning and has now hit safely in all eight of the Guardians 2024 Postseason games.
  • The eight game hit streak to begin his Postseason career is the longest in Cleveland history; previous record was six games by Jhonny Peralta and Lonnie Chisenhall.
    AUSTIN HEDGES: Recorded his first career Postseason extra-base hit with a 4th inning double…Including the regular season, the hit snapped an 0-for-19 stretch dating back to Sept. 11.
    BO NAYLOR: Singled in the 10th inning to snap an 0-for-25 stretch, dating back to Sept. 22 in the regular season.

NEW YORK YANKEES

With tonight’s loss, the Yankees lead in the 2024 ALCS is now 2-1…Fall to 6-2 overall this Postseason.

  • Hit back-to-back home runs in the 8th inning…Aaron Judge tied game at 3-3 with a 2-run HR and Giancarlo Stanton followed with a solo HR to give NYY a 4-3 lead…First time Yankees had back-to-back HR in a Postseason game since Game 5 of 2010 ALCS vs. Texas (Nick Swisher and Robinson Cano).
  • Including the postseason, this is the 50th time Stanton and Judge have homered in the same game, the third-most such games by a pair of Yankees teammates in franchise history, trailing only Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth (75), and Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle (56)…The Yankees are now 46-5 in those games.   • Tonight is the 15th time this season (regular season + Postseason) Stanton and Judge have homered in the same game…Tonight is the first time the Yankees have lost one of those games (14-1)…The 15 games are tied for the second-most such games by any pair of teammates in MLB history, trailing only Texas’ Alex Rodriguez and Rafael Palmeiro (16 such games in 2002).

  • Yankees have drawn 43 walks through the first seven games of the Postseason, which are the most by any team in their first seven games of a Postseason (previous was 42 BB by the 2017 Dodgers).
  • Ian Hamilton (0.1 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO) exited tonight’s game with left calf tightness after facing two batters in the 6th inning.
    CLARKE SCHMIDT: Took a no-decision after allowing two earned runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts across 4.2 innings pitched…Only runs allowed came on a 2-run HR by Kyle Manzardo in the 3rd inning.
    AARON JUDGE: Hit a 2-run HR in the 8th inning to tie the game at 3-3, marking his second consecutive game with a home run.
  • The homer was the 15th of his Postseason career, which ties Babe Ruth for fourth-most in Yankees history, behind Bernie Williams (22), Derek Jeter (20) and Mickey Mantle (18)…Each of his last four Postseason homers have come vs. Guardians.
  • The home run had a 18 degree launch angle, which was his lowest on any home run this year (regular season or Postseason).
    GIANCARLO STANTON: Hit go-ahead solo home run in the 8th inning to give Yankees a 4-3 lead (back-to-back HR with Judge)…It was his 14th career Postseason home run, which ranks sixth in Yankees history.
  • Fourth career Postseason go-ahead HR (second of 2024 Postseason)…Three of the four go-ahead Postseason HR have come vs. Cleveland (also, 2022 ALDS Games 2 & 5).
  • It was his third homer of the 2024 Postseason, which leads all American League players.
    GLEYBER TORRES: Led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a walk and has reached base safely in each of his last 10 Postseason games (including all seven Yankees games this year), dating back to Game 2 of the 2022 ALCS at Houston…He also added a sacrifice fly in the 9th inning to extend Yankees lead to 5-3 (NYY has had a sac fly in all three games of ALCS and now have 61 on the year between the regular season and Postseason – second-most in MLB behind Arizona’s 66).
  • Has reached safely in the Yankees first plate appearance of the game in six of New York’s seven Postseason contests in 2024…Leads all active players with a .600 Postseason OBP in the 1st inning (min. 20 PA).

    JOSE TREVINO: In his first plate appearance of the 2024 Postseason, drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single in the 2nd inning…It was his first Postseason hit since Game 5 of the 2022 ALDS and first playoff RBI since Game 1 of the 2022 ALDS, in his Postseason debut.
    ANTHONY VOLPE: Doubled in the 7th inning, which snapped an 0-for-14 stretch by Yankees hitters (since the RBI single by Jose Trevino in the 2nd inning).
  • Has reached base safely in all seven Yankees Postseason games…The seven-game Postseason on-base streak to begin his career is the longest for a Yankees player since Luke Voit reached in his first nine playoff games, spanning the 2018-20 Postseasons.

2024 AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

  • Tonight was the first game of the 2024 Postseason to go extra innings and first ALCS game to go to extras since Game 2 of the 2019 ALCS (Astros defeated Yankees 3-2 in 11 innings at Minute Maid Park on a walk-off home run by Carlos Correa.
  • The last time each club played an extra-inning Postseason game, was against each other in Game 2 of the 2022 ALDS (Guardians won 4-2 in 10 innings at Yankee Stadum).
