Massachusetts Reports October 2024 Sports Betting Figures

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission announced today that Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor collectively generated approximately $94.22 million in Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) for October 2024.

Additionally, the state’s sports wagering sector generated approximately $48.30 million in taxable revenue for the month, derived from eight mobile/online sports wagering licensees and three in-person licensees.

Gross Gaming Revenue (Casino Gaming): Plainridge Park Casino (PPC), classified as a category 2 slots facility, is taxed at 49% of GGR. Of this, 82% goes to Local Aid and 18% to the Race Horse Development Fund. MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor, both category 1 resort-casinos, are taxed at 25% of GGR, with the funds allocated to various state-designated accounts as per the gaming statute.

Since their respective openings, the Commonwealth has collected approximately $1.902 billion in total taxes and assessments from the operations of PPC, MGM, and Encore.

Sports Wagering Revenue: EBH, MGM, and PPC are licensed as Category 1 Sports Wagering Operators, which allows them to operate retail sportsbooks at their properties. These operators are taxed at 15% of their total sports wagering revenue (TSWR).

Bally Bet, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, ESPNBet, Fanatics Betting & Gaming, and FanDuel are licensed as Category 3 Sports Wagering Operators, enabling them to run mobile or online sportsbooks. These operators are taxed at 20% of their TSWR.

Previously licensed operators Betr and WynnBet, which operated from February 2023 through early 2024, did not renew their licenses after the one-year temporary license period.

The distribution of taxed amounts for all operators is as follows: 45% goes to the General Fund, 17.5% to the Workforce Investment Trust Fund, 27.5% to the Gaming Local Aid Fund, 1% to the Youth Development and Achievement Fund, and 9% to the Public Health Trust Fund.

Since the start of in-person sports wagering on January 31, 2023, and online sports wagering on March 10, 2023, the Commonwealth has collected approximately $197.54 million in total taxes and assessments from licensed sports wagering operators.

If an operator’s adjusted gross sports wagering receipts for a month result in a negative number due to payouts and federal excise taxes exceeding total gross receipts from sports wagering, the Sports Wagering Law allows the operator to carry over the negative tax liability to subsequent months.
