THE HAGUE – In May, the Dutch Gaming Authority (Kansspelautoriteit, Ksa) hosted a roundtable with nearly all licensed online gambling operators in the Netherlands to explore ways to strengthen the quality of player file documentation. Comprehensive and consistent player files are a critical tool in the Ksa’s regulatory oversight.
Online gambling providers are required to maintain pseudonymized player files containing data such as transaction history, behavioral analysis, and records of player interactions. These files may be requested by the Ksa, particularly in cases signaling problematic gambling patterns or excessive losses. The file must clearly demonstrate whether—and how—the operator took action in such scenarios.
Since October 2021, the Ksa has conducted multiple file reviews across various operators to assess how player data is being recorded. These investigations have revealed both best practices and areas where further improvement is needed.
One key takeaway is that significant variation exists in how providers log and structure player file content. To address this, the Ksa convened the roundtable, presented five key principles for effective recordkeeping, and held open discussions with providers on practical implementation.
The initiative aims to standardize and elevate the quality of player files, enabling the Ksa to more effectively supervise operators and ensure better protection for players.
The five focal points, along with frequently asked questions from the session, have been compiled by the Ksa and made available to industry stakeholders.
