HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have signed their first-round pick, Walker Janek, from their 2024 MLB Draft class. Houston has now signed nine players from their 2024 MLB Draft class and three non-drafted free agents. The announcement was made by Astros Director of Amateur Scouting Cam Pendino.
Janek, 21, right-handed hitting catcher, batted .368 (81×220) with 55 runs, 15 doubles, five triples, 17 home runs, 58 RBI and a 1.194 OPS in 58 games for Sam Houston State this season. Janek was the Buster Posey Award winner this year, which is given to the top catcher in college baseball. This season Janek was also named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year and was an All- Conference USA First-Team selection.
The Astros made 19 selections in the three-day 2024 MLB Draft, which ended on July 16.
The deadline for teams to sign their draft picks is August 1.
