DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers have signed right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb to a one-year contract worth $15 million for the 2025 season. Cobb can earn additional bonuses of $1 million each for reaching 140 and 150 innings pitched, potentially bringing the contract’s total value to $17 million.
Cobb, 37, is set to begin his 14th Major League season with the Tigers. Throughout his career, he has accumulated a 79-76 record with a 3.84 ERA over 1,327.2 innings, striking out 1,108 batters and walking 383. His most successful seasons were with the San Francisco Giants in 2022 and 2023, where he earned a combined 5.5 fWAR (24th among pitchers during that period) with a 3.80 ERA in 301.1 innings, recording 282 strikeouts and 80 walks. He was named to the National League All-Star team in 2023.
Cobb is known for his ability to induce groundballs, boasting an elite 55.5% groundball rate. Since his debut in 2011, only Dallas Keuchel (58.6%) and Marcus Stroman (56.7%) have higher rates among pitchers with at least 1,300 innings pitched.
Cobb’s 2024 season was cut short by injury. He started the season with San Francisco before being traded to Cleveland, where he posted a 2.76 ERA in three regular season games. He also appeared in two postseason games for the Guardians, allowing five earned runs over 5.2 innings.
Born in Boston, MA, Cobb attended Vero Beach High School in Florida and was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the fourth round of the 2006 MLB Draft.
