MINNEAPOLIS – The Chicago White Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher Gus Varland off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and optioned him to Class AAA Charlotte.
Varland, 27, is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA (2 ER/6.0 IP) and three strikeouts in seven relief appearances over three stints with the Dodgers this season. He has spent the majority of 2024 at Class AAA Oklahoma City, making 28 appearances (one start).
Varland has gone 1-1 with a 5.81 ERA (17 ER/26.1 IP) and 23 strikeouts in 23 career games over parts of two major-league seasons with Milwaukee (2023) and Los Angeles (2023-24). He originally was selected by Oakland in the 14th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft.
Following the claim, Chicago’s 40-man roster increases to 38.
