MIAMI, Fla. – The Chicago Cubs today recalled infielder Luis Vázquez from Triple-A Iowa and designated infielder David Bote for assignment. Additionally, the club today claimed right-handed pitcher Gavin Hollowell off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa.
Vázquez, 24, has played in two games with the Cubs this season, including his major league debut on May 22 vs. Atlanta. With the I-Cubs, he is hitting .263 with eight home runs and 24 RBI in 64 games. He was originally drafted by the Cubs in the 14th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
Hollowell, 26, has made 32 major league relief appearances—all with the Colorado Rockies—going 2-2 with one save and a 6.20 ERA (28 ER/40.2 IP) in 2022 and 2023. This season, he has split time with Triple-A Reno (Arizona) and Triple-A Albuquerque (Colorado), posting a 1-1 record with a 6.23 ERA in 24 total appearances.
The Somerset, N.J., native made his major league debut on Sept. 19, 2022, against San Francisco. He was originally selected in the sixth round of the 2019 MLB Draft by Colorado out of St. John’s University.
Bote, 31, is hitting .304 with six RBI in 37 games this season with the Cubs.
