Offensive Player of the Week

Matthew Downing | QB | Elon

Downing passed for a season-high 315 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in Elon’s 40-36 road win at #20 William & Mary. The senior, who threw TD passes to four different receivers, twice rallied the Phoenix from 4th-quarter deficits. He had a 1-yard scoring run with 5:12 left before guiding a 72-yard drive and throwing a game-winning 15-yard strike to Onuma Dieke with five seconds to play

Defensive Player of the Week

Matthew Traynor | LB | Richmond Traynor recorded a career-high 12 tackles, a career-best 2.0 TFL’s and intercepted a pass in Richmond’s 27-24 victory at Campbell. The 12 stops were five more than his previous best and the interception was his first since the season opener at Virginia. He was part of a Spiders’ defense that held CU to seven 2nd-half points as UR rallied from a 10-point defi cit.

Special Teams Player of the Week

Nick Mazzie | PK | New Hampshire Mazzie accounted for 15 points in UNH’s 33-20 triumph over Monmouth. The junior was 4-for-4 on field goals, connecting on kicks of 42, 35, 35 and 31 yards, and made all three of his extra point tries. Mazzie leads the CAA with 14 made fi eld goals, including six over 40 yards.

Rookie of the Week

Randall King | WR/KR | Campbell King contributed 147 all-purpose yards and a touchdown in Campbell’s 27-24 setback to #13 Richmond. The freshman gave the Camels a 14-7 second-quarter lead after returning a kickoff 90 yards for a TD, which was the first for CU since 2018. King also made four catches for 53 yards and has 300 receiving yards in the last four games.

CONFERENCE NOTES:

ROAD TESTS FOR CAA FRONTRUNNERS: Five teams remain separated by just one game at the top of the CAA standings and several of those squads hit the road on Saturday. First-place Richmond takes its eight-game winning streak to Hampton, while Villanova heads to Monmouth and Stony Brook visits New Hampshire. The other two one-loss squads play their home finales as Rhode Island hosts UAlbany and Delaware welcomes Campbell. Also on the Week 12 slate, North Carolina A&T is at Towson, William & Mary entertains Bryant and Maine makes the long trip to Elon.

STRENGTH FROM TOP TO BOTTOM: The CAA has often been considered the strongest top-to-bottom league in FCS football, and this year is no exception. Ten of the CAA’s 16 teams (62.5%) have .500 or better overall records. The conference race is also the highest in FCS with five teams within a game of first place with two weeks remaining.

HOME NOT SO SWEET IN CAA ACTION: Through 48 conference games this season, home teams have just a 26-22 record.

VILLANOVA, RICHMOND MOVE INTO TOP 10: Four CAA teams are ranked in the FCS Top 25 this week, including two in the top 10. Villanova is ranked #8 in the AFCA poll and #9 in the Stats poll, while Richmond is ranked #7 by the AFCA and #11 by Stats. Stony Brook moved up to #16 in the Stats poll and #17 in the AFCA poll and Rhode Island is ranked #15 by Stats and #18 by the AFCA. William & Mary received votes in both polls and UNH picked up votes in the Stats poll. Hampton is ranked #10 in the HBCU Coaches poll, administered by BOXTOROW.

W&M’S GRANT RECEIVES REESE’S SENIOR BOWL INVITE: William & Mary offensive lineman Charles Grant was the first player to earn and accept an invitation to the Reese’s Senior Bowl. which will be played Feb. 1 and televised by NFL Network. Last year’s Senior Bowl featured 110 NFL Draft picks. Grant will be the 9th W&M player to participate in the game.

TEAM NOTES

UALBANY 3-7 Overall/1-5 CAAFB

• UAlbany’s defense held Stony Brook to 321 total yards, including 92 rushing. It was the 7th ÆŸ me in the past 8 games that the Great Danes have allowed less than 340 yards. • True freshman QB Van Weber was 20-of-31 passing for 201 yards and a TD in his first collegiate action at SBU. • Dontae Lunan leads the CAA with 96 tackles. He’s recorded double-digit stops in seven of UA’s 10 games. • Ron Holmes made a season-high 14 tackles at SBU and has 71 stops for the year.

BRYANT 2-8 Overall/0-6 CAAFB

• Freshman Brennan Myer threw for 251 yards and a career-high 4 TD’s at Maine. Over the past three games, he’s passed for 710 yards and 9 TD’s. • Landon Ruggieri caught 2 TD passes at Maine, which was his 4th game this year with multiple TD’s. He leads FCS in receiving TD’s (13) and is 7th in receiving yards (879). • Markiel Cockrell had 4 catches for a team-high 71 yards and ran for 57 yards at UM. • CeeDee Doby recorded a career-high 11 tackles and 0.5 TFL at Maine.

CAMPBELL 3-7 Overall/1-4 CAAFB

• Sincere Brown had 7 catches for 62 yards and a TD vs. Richmond. He ranks 4th in FCS in receiving yards (951). His 11 TD catches are a CU record and rank 3rd in FCS. • QB Mike Chandler II ran for a season-high 121 yards and a TD and passed for 128 yards and a TD vs. UR. • Randall King had a 90-yard KOR for a TD vs. UR, which was the first by a CU player since 2018. He added 53 receiving yards. • Jalen Brooks had 8 tackles and 1.5 TFL’s vs. UR and leads Campbell with 93 stops.

DELAWARE 8-1 Overall/5-1 CAAFB

• Marcus Yarns ran for a career-high 174 yards and a TD against URI. It was his third 100+ yard rushing effort in the past five games. • Phil Lutz had 5 catches for 89 yards vs. URI. He ranks 6th in FCS in receiving TD’s (9) and 18th in receiving yards (82.3 ypg). He had a TD catch in the Hens’ first 7 games. • Dillon Trainer recorded a team-best 8 tackles vs. URI and added 2.0 TFL’s. • Gavin Moul, who leads UD with 56 tackles, sealed the URI win by intercepting a pass with 34 seconds to play.

ELON 4-6 Overall/3-3 CAAFB

• Matthew Downing threw for 315 yards and 4 TD’s and added a rushing TD at W&M. He has 9 TD passes over the last three games. • Rushawn Baker ran for a career-high 167 yards at W&M and has 321 rushing yards over the past two games. • Chandler Brayboy leads FCS in kickoff returns (36.9 avg) and ranks 7th in all-purpose yards (148.2 ypg). He tops Elon with 44 receptions for 723 yards and 6 TD’s. • Elon’s offense is averaging 45.0 points and 478.5 yards over the past two games.

HAMPTON 5-5 Overall/3-3 CAAFB

• Ja’Quan Snipes ran for a team-high 80 yards at Towson last week and has rushed for 342 yards and 3 TD’s in the last 4 games. • Hampton ranks 22nd in FCS in rushing (195.1 ypg). The Pirates have run for over 170 yards in six games. • HU’s defense has held its past four opponents under 300 total yards and to less than 100 yards rushing. The Pirates have also recorded 15 sacks in the 4-game stretch. • Corey Yeoman had 8 tackles and a forced fumble at TU. His 58 stops lead the team.

MAINE 5-5 Overall/3-3 CAAFB

• Carter Peevy passed for 269 yards and a career-high 4 TD’s vs. Bryant. He ranks 7th in FCS in completion pct. (69.4%) and has thrown a TD pass in 7 straight games. • Montigo Moss had 7 catches for a career-high 122 yards and 2 TD’s vs. Bryant. He leads UM with 583 receiving yards. • Maine has held five of its last six FCS opponents to less than 120 yards rushing. • Xavier Holmes contributed 6 tackles, 1.5 TFL’s and an interception vs. Bryant. He tops UM with 11 TFL’s and 6.0 sacks.

MONMOUTH 4-6 Overall/2-4 CAAFB

• MU ranks in the top 8 in FCS in total offense (468.7 ypg), passing offense (305.6 ypg) and scoring offense (37.3 ppg). • Derek Robertson is 3rd in FCS in passing yards (3,043) and 4th in passing TD’s (25). He is 5 TD’s and 839 passing yards shy of Monmouth’s single-season records. • Sone Ntoh leads FCS with 21 rushing TD’s, which is one shy of the MU season mark. • Josh Derry made 5 catches for 52 yards at UNH. He’s 8th in FCS in receiving yards (94.3 ypg) and has three games with 100+ yards.

UNH 6-4 Overall/4-2 CAAFB

• Logan Tomlinson made a career-high 9 catches for 104 yards and a TD vs. Monmouth. He ranks 6th in FCS in receptions (6.8 pg) and 11th in receiving TD’s (8). • Josiah Silver ranks 2nd in FCS in sacks (11.5) and 3rd in TFL’s (17.5). He has 54 tackles. • Seth Morgan passed for 205 yards and 2 TD’s vs. MU. It was his 5th game with 200+ yards passing and 6th with multiple TD’s. • Wande Owens had 8 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery vs. MU. He leads UNH with 89 stops for the year.

NORTH CAROLINA A&T 1-9 Overall/0-6 CAAFB

• QB Braxton Thomas made his first start at Villanova and ran for a team-high 49 yards on 8 carries and threw for 30 yards. • Aaron Harris had a 40-yard kickoff return at VU and ranks 3rd in FCS in kickoff returns (29.9 avg) for the season. • Kade Moledor made 9 tackles and 1.5 TFL’s at VU. He had made 9 or more stops in three of the past four games. • Henry Daniel contributed 2.5 TFL’s and 2 QB hurries at VU. He leads A&T with 4.0 sacks, 10.5 TFL’s and 4 QB hurries for the season.

RHODE ISLAND 8-2 Overall/5-1 CAAFB

• Had their 7-game winning streak snapped in a 24-21 setback at Delaware last week. • Marquis Buchanan made 5 receptions for 85 yards and a TD at Delaware. It was his 5th game with 75+ receiving yards. • Malik Grant has four 100+-yard outings and has 7 TD’s in the past 7 games. • Devin Hightower made a team-high 10 tackles at UD and returned a fumble for a TD. • A.J. Pena ranks 18th in FCS in sacks (8.0) and 8th in tackles for loss (15.0).

RICHMOND 8-2 Overall/6-0 CAAFB

• Rallied past Campbell to extend their win streak to 8, which is the longest since 2009. UR’s 6-0 CAA mark is its best since 2009. • Cam Coleman passed for 252 yards and 2 TD’s and ran for 55 yards at CU. It was his fifth 200+-yard effort in the past 7 games. • Zach Palmer-Smith has 980 rushing yards and needs 20 more to become UR’s first 1,000-yard rusher since 2015. • Matthew Traynor set career-highs for tackles (12) and TFL’s (2) at CU and picked off his 2nd pass of the season.

STONY BROOK 8-2 Overall/5-1 CAAFB

• Beat UAlbany last week to push its win streak to four and claim the Golden Apple. SBU’s 8-2 record is its best since 2017. • Roland Dempster ran for 98 yards and 2 TD’s vs. UA. He’s 6th in FCS in rushing (1,152 yds) and 3rd in rushing TD’s (18). • Tyler Knoop passed for 229 yards and a TD at UA and has thrown for 1,141 yards and 10 TD’s over the past four games. • Stony Brook has forced 23 TO’s, which is the 4th-most in FCS, and they are +11 in TO margin after forcing 4 TO’s against UAlbany.

TOWSON 5-5 Overall/3-3 CAAFB

• Towson’s defense held Hampton to 286 yards and 10 points, the fewest it has allowed in both categories since Sept. 7. • Daniel Raymond had 5 tackles, 1.5 TFL and a 62-yard pick six vs. Hampton, which was the first for the Tigers since 2022. • Sean Brown accounted for both Towson TD’s vs. Hampton with a 12-yard run and an 8-yard pass to Carter Runyon. • Devin Matthews ranks 7th in career rushing yards (2,112) at Towson and his 26 career TD’s are ÆŸ ed for 6th on the all-ÆŸ me list.

VILLANOVA 8-2 Overall/6-1 CAAFB

• VU held N.C. A&T to 169 total yards and has kept its last six opponents under 350 yards. VU ranks 5th in FCS in scoring defense (15.7 ppg) and 12th in total defense (296.5 ypg). • Connor Watkins threw for 167 yards and a TD and added 31 rush yards and 2 TD’s vs. A&T. He has accounted for 14 TD’s in 2024. • Shane Hartzell recorded 8 tackles and a career-high 2.0 sacks vs. A&T. He leads VU with 92 tackles and 4.0 sacks for the year. • Villanova has won 14 consecutive games at Villanova Stadium.

WILLIAM & MARY 6-4 Overall/3-3 CAAFB

• W&M ranks 3rd in FCS in rushing (248.5 ypg) and 11th in total offense (444.6 ypg). W&M has rushed for 200+ yards in 7 games. • Darius Wilson threw for 181 yards and a TD and ran for 87 yards and a TD vs. Elon. He ranks 2nd on W&M’s career total offense list (8,712 yds.). • Bronson Yoder ran for 61 yards and 2 TD’s vs. EU and is now 3rd on W&M’s career rushing list (3,596 yds.). • Jalen Jones leads FCS in PBU’s (17) and passes defended (19).
