WHAT TO WATCH FOR
ALL AMERICAN
The Sun Belt’s slate on Saturday, Sept. 7, features five head-to-head matchups with American opposition—Troy visits Memphis at 11 a.m. on ESPNU, Texas State hosts UTSA at 3 p.m. on ESPNU, Old Dominion hosts East Carolina at 5 p.m. on ESPN+, Arkansas State hosts Tulsa at 6 p.m. on ESPN+ and ULM hosts UAB at 6 p.m. on ESPN+. The conference went 5-4 against American foes in 2023 and split a pair of Week 1 contests to open the 2024 season. This weekend’s matchups include the I-35 Rivalry between UTSA and Texas State—where 4-of-5 prior contests have been decided by a single possession— and a date with a familiar foe for ULM head coach Bryant Vincent—who served on the UAB coaching staff in 2014 and then from 2018-22, concluding his tenure as interim head coach.
SHOT HERD ROUND THE WORLD
Marshall, which owns a victory over an autonomy five program in each of the past two seasons, will have the first of two opportunities to continue that streak when it travels to Virginia Tech on Saturday, Sept. 7, for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff on The CW. The Thundering Herd defeated the Hokies, 24-17, in Huntington in 2023 and bested Notre Dame, 26-21, in 2022, as part of the Sun Belt’s Statement Saturday with three victories over autonomy five programs.
COME SEE US
Four Sun Belt programs will host FCS opposition on Saturday, Sept. 7. James Madison welcomes Gardner-Webb to Harrisonburg at 5 p.m. on ESPN+; Coastal Carolina hosts William & Mary on the Surf Turf at 6 p.m. on ESPN+; Georgia State looks for the first win of the Dell McGee era against Chattanooga at 6 p.m. on ESPN+; and Southern Miss takes on Southeastern Louisiana at 6 p.m. on ESPN+. Troy and South Alabama join Georgia State in looking for the first victories of new head coaching eras in Week 2.
HIT THE ROAD
Three Sun Belt programs—South Alabama, Georgia Southern and Louisiana—will hit the road for matchups against fellow non-autonomy conference foes. The Jaguars will visit Ohio out of the MAC at 5 p.m. on ESPN+, the Eagles will take on Nevada out of the Mountain West at 6 p.m. on TruTV and the Ragin’ Cajuns will square off against Kennesaw State out of Conference USA at 6 p.m. on ESPN+. The Sun Belt boasted a winning record against MAC, Mountain West and Conference USA programs during the 2023 regular season.
WINNING WAYS
Two of the winningest FBS programs of the last decade will meet on Saturday, Sept. 7, when App State travels to No. 25/22 Clemson for a 7 p.m. kickoff on the ACC Network. Since making the FCS-to-FBS transition and joining the Sun Belt in 2014, the Mountaineers own 96 wins—tied with Notre Dame for the sixth-most in the country over that span. The only teams with more wins than App State during their Sun Belt tenure are Alabama (128), Clemson (119), Ohio State (116), Georgia (115) and Oklahoma (103). The Mountaineers’ last eight games against autonomy five opposition have all been decided by one possession, with App State proving victorious in three of those contests—defeating Texas A&M, 17-14 in 2022; South Carolina, 20-15 in 2019; and North Carolina 34-31 in 2019.
