BIG TEN. BIG NEWS.
• The Big Ten combined to go 17-1 in Week 1 contests. Penn State and UCLA scored road victories, while USC scored in the final minutes to top LSU in Las Vegas.
• Sixteen teams will be in action this week, including Michigan State and Maryland, who will meet in College Park, Md. in the season’s first Big Ten contest. The complete Week 2 schedule is to the right.
• The Big Ten announced its first Big Ten Football Players of the Week, presented by IFS.ai on Monday. USC’s Miller Moss was named Offensive Player of the Week after completing 27 of his 36 attempts for 378 yards and a touchdown in the Trojan’s 27-20 win over LSU.
• Penn State safety Kevin Winston Jr. claimed Defensive Player of the Week honors after matching a career best 12 tackles, including seven solo stops, in the Nittany Lions’ 34-12 victory at West Virginia.
• UCLA’s Mateen Bhaghani and Michigan’s Dominic Zvada shared Special Teams Player of the Week accolades. Bhaghani went 3-3 on field goal attempts, including the game-winning 32-yarder in the final minute to give the Bruins a 16-13 win at Hawaii, while Zvada recorded field goals of 53 and 55 yards, both among the longest in program history in the Wolverines’ 30-10 win over Fresno State.
• Dominic Raiola went 19-of-27 for 238 yards and two touchdowns in Nebraska’s 40-7 season-opening win over UTEP en route to Freshman of the Week honors.
• This week’s college football national schedule features just two top 25 matchups, with one taking place in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as the No. 9 Wolverines host No. 4 Texas. This will mark just the second time the Wolverines and Longhorns have met, and the first in the regular season. Texas won the only previous meeting, a 38-37 affair on a last-second field goal in the 91st Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1, 2006.
• Saturday night’s thrilling USC win over LSU was ABC’s most streamed college football game on record and ranked among the top 10 regular season games on ESPN platforms over the last five seasons. More than 9.2 viewers saw the Trojans drive 75 yards in the final two minutes to score the game-winning touchdown. USC’s Miller Moss connected with Kyron Hudson five times for 83 yards, while Woody Marks collected 68 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns, including the game’s final score with eight seconds to play.
• Purdue’s Hudson Card tied an FBS record for completion percentage in Saturday’s 49-0 win over Indiana State. The senior quarterback completed 24 of 25 passes (96%) for 273 yards and a career-high four touchdowns in the victory.
• Maryland posted its largest margin of victory in a season-opening win against an FBS opponent since 1978 and allowed its fewest points against an FBS opponent in a season-opener since 2001 in Saturday’s 50-7 win over UConn. Quarterback Billy Edwards led the Terps to scoring drives on five of their first six possessions, finishing the day 20-of-27 for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Tai Felton set career bests with seven catches and 178 yards with a pair of touchdowns.
• UCLA overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit to score its 16-13 win at Hawaii on Saturday. Quarterback Ethan Garbers found Rico Flores Jr. for a 39-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter, before Mateen Bhaghani scored the game’s final nine points, including the game-winning 32-yard field goal with 56 seconds to play.
• The top two teams in the regular season standings will meet in the 2024 Discover Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday, Dec. 7 at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis, Ind. The game, which will be broadcast on CBS for the first time ever, will be the first in conference history to match the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the overall conference standings.
