Conference News & Notes
• The Big 12 Conference posted a record of 9-5 against other conferences in week two to give the league a combined non-conference record of 25-7 through the first two weeks of the season.
• The Conference’s five nationally ranked teams went 4-1 in week two.
• The Big 12 is home to the nation’s longest active winning streak at 9 consecutive wins by Arizona.
• For the second consecutive week, a Big 12 player led the nation in scrim- mage yards, as Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo gained 297 yards against Mississippi State (262 rushing and 35 receiving). Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan led the nation in Week 1.
• The Big 12 placed five teams in the AP Top 25 poll this week, including Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Utah all ranked in the top 15.
• This week’s national rankings mark the first time since 2012 that five or more Big 12 teams have been ranked in the first three AP polls of the season.
• Four of the top 20 FBS leaders in rushing yards per game are from the Big 12, including NCAA Division I leader UCF at 419.0.
• Friday’s Arizona-Kansas State matchup will not count as a conference game, due to it being originally scheduled as a non-conference game prior to Arizona becoming a member of the Big 12 Conference. The nonconference status also applied to last week’s game between Baylor and Utah for identical reasons.
• Through week two, Big 12 institutions represent 13 of the top 50 national leaders in average attendance in FBS.
• Three Big 12 teams had a game-winning score in the last two minutes or later to beat a Power 4 team: BYU (to beat SMU), Iowa State (to beat Iowa) and Oklahoma State (in double OT to beat Arkansas).
• Week three will feature the Big 12’s first conference game on Saturday when TCU hosts UCF at 6:30 p.m. CT on FOX. TCU was also part of the Conference’s opener last season, facing Houston in week three.
• For the second consecutive week, the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week has also been named AP National Player of the Week. Arizona wideout Tetairoa McMillan achieved the feat in week one with 10 catches, 304 receiving yards and four touchdowns in a win over New Mexico before Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo amassed 297 yards of offense (262 rushing yards) in his team’s victory over Mississippi State in week two.
• The 2024 season will be the Big 12 Conference’s first as a 16-team league. The Big 12 footprint now spans 10 states, four time zones and 90 million people as it begins its 29th football season.
• The Conference partnered with TuneIn, the world’s leader in live audio, to launch Big 12 Radio prior to week one. The new 24/7 Conference-branded audio station, is now streaming to fans across the United States. The station includes Big 12 weekday sports talk, extensive Saturday game-day coverage, Big 12 school content and music programming. Additionally, listeners can access a ‘Game of The Week’ featuring gameday coverage from their Big 12 school’s local play-by-play broadcast team.
• The Big 12 boasts eight running backs who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season, leading all conferences nationally. The group of running backs includes the reigning Doak Walker Award winner in Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon II as well as three other backs who were in the top 10 in the nation in rushing in 2023.
• The national preseason award watchlists recognized dozens of student-athletes from the Big 12’s 16 schools as the league was among the leaders in a number of prestigious awards. Eight Big 12 quarterbacks were named to the Davey O’Brien Award Watch List, which tied for the most of any conference.
• Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy and Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham are both entering their 20th season at their respective institutions. The duo is tied for the second-longest active tenured coaches in the nation, trailing only Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz who begins his 25th season with the Hawkeyes.
