Jaron Ennis is set to defend his IBF World Welterweight title against David Avanesyan at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Saturday, July 13, with the action streamed live worldwide on DAZN . Despite replacing Cody Crowley due to medical issues, Avanesyan is hardly an understudy; in fact, he might just make the fight more entertaining for the Philly crowd—if that’s even possible.
Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs) is fighting in his hometown for the first time since 2018, fresh off a win where he knocked out Roiman Villa last year. Meanwhile, Avanesyan (30-4-1, 18 KOs), the man with a penchant for knocking out Brits and a previous World title holder himself, is set to make July 13 a night to remember—or at least better than whatever else you were planning to do.
Ennis seemed almost relieved not to be facing Crowley. “Now that Crowley is officially not my opponent, I actually like Avanesyan as a better opponent,” Ennis said. “He will put up a better fight, which is exactly what I want. Don’t miss this beautiful, outstanding performance!” Well, let’s hope it’s as “beautiful” as he promises.
Avanesyan, thrilled for another shot at glory, added, “This is my last World title chance and I have to take it. I do respect Ennis and his career as he has been perfect, but he has what I want and need.” Sounds like he’s ready to rumble, or at least ready to give it a really good try.
Apart from the main event, the night features a slew of fights including Jalil Hackett vs. Peter Dobson for the WBA Continental North America Welterweight title, Skye Nicolson defending her WBC World Featherweight title against Dyana Vargas, and a light-heavyweight bout between Khalil Coe and Manuel Gallegos. And if that’s not enough, we’ve got a pro debut that’s sure to be… well, a pro debut.
