Club options left-handed pitcher Zach Penrod to Worcester
BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher Quinn Priester from Triple-A Worcester. He will wear number 68. To make room, Boston optioned left-handed pitcher Zach Penrod to Worcester.
Priester, 24, was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 29 in exchange for minor league infielder/outfielder Nick Yorke. The right-hander has made nine starts for Worcester, striking out 42 batters while recording a 5.40 ERA (23 ER/38.1 IP). In four September starts, he has gone 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA (5 ER/18.1 IP) and .197 opponent batting average (13-for-66). Selected by the Pirates in the first round (No. 18 overall) of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the Illinois native owns a 6.46 ERA (68 ER/94.2 IP) in 20 Major League games (14 starts) with Pittsburgh (2023-24).
Penrod, 27, has posted a 2.25 ERA (1 ER/4.0 IP) in seven games with Boston this season, his Major League debut. Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in August 2023, the Idaho native has also recorded a 4.16 ERA (29 ER/62.2 IP) with 93 SO in 22 minor league games (12 starts) this season between Double-A Portland (seven starts) and Worcester (15 games, five starts).
