The Boston Red Sox have acquired right-handed pitcher Jorge Alcala from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor league infielder/outfielder Andy Lugo. To accommodate Alcala on the 40-man roster, Boston has designated right-hander Brian Van Belle for assignment.

Alcala, 29, has appeared in 22 games for the Twins this season, posting an 8.88 ERA (24 ER/24.1 IP) with 28 strikeouts. Though he struggled in his last two outings, allowing nine runs across 2.0 innings, he previously maintained a 3.86 ERA over a strong 12-game stretch (April 19 – June 3), holding opponents to a .220 batting average.
A Dominican Republic native, Alcala originally signed with the Houston Astros in 2014 before joining Minnesota in 2018. Across his 166 career Major League appearances (2019–25), he owns a 4.32 ERA (90 ER/187.2 IP) with 193 strikeouts.
Andy Lugo – Prospect Profile
Lugo, 21, has played in 44 games for High-A Greenville this season, batting .265 (40-for-151) with 11 doubles, four home runs, and 20 RBI. Versatile defensively, he has made starts at first base (21), third base (16), and left field (4). Signed as an international free agent in July 2021, Lugo has hit .279 across 208 career minor league games.
Brian Van Belle – Recent Performance
Van Belle, 28, was added to the active Major League roster on June 9 but has not yet made an appearance for Boston. In 12 games (eight starts) for Triple-A Worcester, he posted a 5-1 record with a 2.29 ERA (13 ER/51.0 IP), 41 strikeouts, and a 1.06 WHIP. A non-drafted free agent signing in 2020, Van Belle has logged 502.1 minor league innings across 115 games (84 starts), all within the Red Sox organization.
