WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Athletics have announced the acquisition of right-handed pitcher Elvis Alvarado off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. In a corresponding move, the A’s designated right-handed pitcher Anthony Maldonado for assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster.

Alvarado, who played the 2024 season with the Miami Marlins organization, posted a combined 3-4 record, 11 saves, and a 2.66 ERA across 41 relief appearances with Triple-A Jacksonville and Single-A Jupiter. He held opponents to a .188 batting average, recorded 74 strikeouts in 50.2 innings, but issued 40 walks. The 25-year-old right-hander signed a Major League contract with Pittsburgh on December 28, 2024, but was designated for assignment this Tuesday. Originally signed by the Nationals out of the Dominican Republic in 2015, Alvarado has accumulated a 15-14 record, 23 saves, and a 4.25 ERA in 175 minor league games, including seven starts, over six seasons.
Maldonado, claimed off waivers from Miami on November 4, 2024, made his Major League debut last year with the Marlins. He posted a 1-1 record, a save, a 5.68 ERA, and a .768 opponents OPS in 16 games, including one start, across four stints with the Marlins. The 26-year-old right-hander also went 4-4 with five saves, a 4.66 ERA, and a .789 opponents OPS in 33 relief appearances with Triple-A Jacksonville.
