OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics selected right-handed pitcher Norge Ruiz from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned right-handed pitcher Domingo Tapia to Las Vegas, the club announced today.
Ruiz has spent the entire season at Las Vegas where he is 5-1 with two saves, a 3.83 ERA and .232 opponents batting average in 30 relief appearances. He has held left-handed hitters to a .190 batting average while righties are hitting .261 with four of the five home runs he has allowed. The 28-year-old right-handed native of Cuba was signed by the A’s on Dec. 22, 2016 and will be making his Major League debut. Ruiz is 20-18 with five saves, a 5.08 ERA and .296 opponents batting average in 113 games, including 36 starts, in five seasons in the minors.
Tapia was recalled from Las Vegas on Aug. 8 for his fourth stint with the A’s this year, and allowed three runs on nine hits and five walks in 6.2 innings of work over three relief appearances. He has a 7.80 ERA and .968 opponents OPS in nine relief appearances overall with Oakland and has combined for three saves, a 2.73 ERA and .610 OPS in 25 minor league appearances with the Aviators and Triple-A Omaha.
