Toronto Argonauts add Defensive Back Willie Drew, Fullback Wilt Gabriel

TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts have bolstered their roster with the signings of American defensive back Willie Drew and National fullback Wilt Gabriel, the team announced Tuesday.

Willie Drew (DB, 6’0″, 185 lbs)

Fresh off a championship run with the DC Defenders in the UFL, Drew returns to Toronto after a brief stint with the Argonauts late in the 2024 season. He joined the practice roster in September and was part of the team’s Grey Cup-winning squad just weeks later.

A standout at Virginia State, Drew earned CIAA Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2023, posting 34 tackles, six interceptions, and 16 pass breakups in 10 games. Over his collegiate career at VSU, he appeared in 28 games, amassing:

  • 99 tackles
  • 11 interceptions
  • 39 pass deflections
  • 1 forced fumble
  • 1 fumble recovery

Before transferring to Virginia State, Drew played two seasons at James Madison University. He also spent time with the Carolina Panthers during their 2024 training camp.

Wilt Gabriel (FB, 6’3″, 245 lbs)

A versatile National prospect, Gabriel played at Houston Christian University in 2022 following two seasons at Coastal Carolina (2020–2021). Originally from Montreal, Gabriel began his collegiate journey at Independence Community College in Kansas, where he played defensive tackle and recorded three tackles in 2019.
