Arlington, TX – The Texas Rangers today announced a trio of roster moves ahead of tonight’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers at Globe Life Field:

  • The club has selected the contracts of first baseman Rowdy Tellez (#44) and infielder Cody Freeman (#39) from Triple-A Round Rock.
  • Outfielder Sam Haggerty has been placed on the 10-day Injured List, retroactive to July 15, due to left ankle inflammation.

Rowdy Tellez, 30, joins the Rangers after a brief stint with the Seattle Mariners this season, where he hit .208 (36-for-173) with 11 homers and 27 RBI across 62 games, mostly at first base. Following his release from Seattle in late June, Tellez signed a minor league deal with Texas on July 4 and quickly made an impact in Round Rock, batting .333 (5-for-15) with 2 homers and 4 RBI in just four games.

A veteran of eight MLB seasons, Tellez owns a career slash line of .232/.300/.435 with 116 home runs and 346 RBI across 726 games for Toronto, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Seattle. A native of Elk Grove, California, he was originally drafted by Toronto in the 30th round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

Cody Freeman, 24, earns his first call-up to the Majors following a stellar campaign with Round Rock, where he hit .315/.367/.494 with 12 home runs, 20 doubles, and 54 RBI in 79 games. Ranked among the Pacific Coast League’s statistical leaders, Freeman was recently named the Rangers’ Minor League Player of the Month for June, hitting safely in 21 of 23 games that month. A versatile infielder, he’s played at third base, second base, shortstop, and designated hitter throughout the season.

Freeman’s upcoming debut marks a milestone for the young infielder and reflects the Rangers’ ongoing investment in developing homegrown talent.
