Boston Red Sox reinstate Marcelo Mayer from Bereavement List; Nick Sogard optioned to Triple-A

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox announced today that they have reinstated infielder Marcelo Mayer from the Bereavement List. In a corresponding move, the club has optioned utility man Nick Sogard to Triple-A Worcester.

Mayer, 22, is in the midst of his rookie Major League season, having appeared in 27 games to date. The former first-round pick (No. 4 overall, 2021) is batting .208 (16-for-77) with three doubles, one triple, and four home runs, while making 20 starts at third base and two at second base. Prior to his call-up, he hit .271 (46-for-170) with 43 RBI over 43 games for Worcester.

Sogard, 27, has contributed across the diamond in 17 big league games this season, slashing .254 (15-for-59) with five doubles and 10 runs scored. Defensively, he’s made 11 starts at first base, along with stints at second and third. The switch-hitter has also appeared in 45 games for Worcester in 2025, hitting .234 (39-for-167) with 28 runs, nine doubles, and three home runs. Originally drafted by Tampa Bay in the 12th round of the 2019 MLB Draft, Sogard owns a career Major League batting average of .265 (36-for-136) across 48 games—all with Boston between 2024 and 2025.
