SACRAMENTO – The Chicago White Sox have announced the acquisition of infielder Gage Workman from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations. In a corresponding move, the team has designated infielder Nick Maton for assignment ahead of today’s game against the Oakland Athletics.
Workman, 25, was designated for assignment by the Cubs on April 23. He made his Major League debut earlier this season on March 29 against Arizona and has appeared in nine games, posting a .214 batting average (3-for-14) with one double and two RBIs. Originally selected by the Cubs in the Rule 5 Draft on December 11, 2024, from the Detroit Tigers, Workman will now wear uniform No. 41 for the White Sox.
Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 200 pounds, Workman showcased his potential in 2024 with Class AA Erie, where he batted .280/.366/.476, hitting 29 doubles, six triples, 18 home runs, and driving in 89 runs over 126 games. He played a key role in leading Erie to its second consecutive Eastern League Championship and earned Eastern League Postseason All-Star honors.
A left-handed batter, Workman is a career .248/.326/.435 hitter in the minors, tallying 111 doubles, 24 triples, 57 home runs, 263 RBIs, and 110 stolen bases across 472 games. He was originally drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the second round of the 2020 First-Year Player Draft.
Meanwhile, Maton, 28, appeared in 23 games for the White Sox this season, hitting .173 (9-for-52) with two doubles, two home runs, and four RBIs.
Following these moves, the White Sox’s 40-man roster remains at full capacity.
