Pittsburgh Pirates Acquire OF Alexander Canario from New York Mets

The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced the acquisition of outfielder Alexander Canario (pronounced “cah-NAR-ee-oh”) from the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations.

Canario, 24, was previously traded to the Mets from the Chicago Cubs on February 25. During Spring Training with New York, he showcased his offensive potential by batting .306 (11-for-36) with nine runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, and eight RBIs across 17 games.

A native of Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, Canario has Major League experience, having played 21 games for the Cubs between 2023 and 2024. Over that span, he hit .286 (12-for-42) with five extra-base hits and eight RBIs. Notably, in his second career MLB game—and first start—on September 19, 2023, against the Pirates at Wrigley Field, Canario made history by becoming the first player to hit a grand slam and record five or more RBIs in their first career start.

To accommodate Canario on the 40-man roster, the Pirates transferred right-handed pitcher Jared Jones from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. The Pirates are optimistic that Canario will bring energy and offensive contributions to their lineup as they gear up for the season ahead.
