At 37 years old, Gibson brings a wealth of experience and consistent performance to Baltimore. In the 2024 season with the St. Louis Cardinals, he posted an 8-8 record with a 4.24 ERA across 30 starts, logging 169.2 innings pitched. He allowed 161 hits (23 HR), 91 runs (80 earned), 68 walks (1 intentional), and struck out 151 batters, demonstrating his ability to generate swing-and-miss opportunities. Impressively, Gibson maintained a 20.9% strikeout rate, his highest since 2018 (22.7%), and pitched at least 6.0 innings in 17 starts, showcasing his durability and reliability on the mound. Notably, Gibson is part of an elite group of only seven MLB pitchers who have made 30 or more starts in each of the past four seasons, a roster that includes current Oriole Charlie Morton.

A Familiar Face Returns

Gibson is no stranger to Baltimore, having been a key contributor to the Orioles’ 2023 campaign. In that season, he led the rotation with a 15-9 record and a 4.73 ERA over 192.0 innings pitched in 33 starts. His efforts tied him for the American League lead in starts, ranked him third in wins, and placed him sixth in innings pitched across the league. Gibson also earned the honor of being the team’s Opening Day starter in 2023.

Off the field, Gibson made a significant impact in the community. He was named the Orioles’ nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award in 2023, an annual honor recognizing one player from each MLB team who exemplifies outstanding character, sportsmanship, and philanthropy. This marked his second consecutive nomination, having also received the distinction in 2022 as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies.

A Proven Career

A native of Greenfield, Indiana, Gibson’s professional journey began when he was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft after a standout collegiate career at the University of Missouri. Over the course of his career, Gibson has compiled a 112-108 record with a 4.52 ERA across 1,865.2 innings in 330 career games (324 starts). His resume includes stints with the Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, and of course, the Baltimore Orioles.

Gibson’s accolades include being named a 2021 American League All-Star and participating in the 2011 Futures Game, marking him as one of baseball’s most promising talents in his early years.

Roster Move

To accommodate Gibson on the 40-man roster, the Orioles placed right-handed pitcher Kyle Bradish on the 60-day Injured List following right elbow UCL surgery. With this move, the Orioles’ 40-man roster remains at full capacity.

Kyle Gibson’s return to Baltimore for the 2025 season solidifies the Orioles’ rotation with a dependable and experienced starter. Known for his durability and leadership on and off the field, Gibson is poised to make another significant impact as the Orioles aim to build on their recent successes.
