O’s signing class includes players from Cuba, Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, and Venezuela

The Baltimore Orioles have announced the signing of 22 players as they open the 2024-25 International Signing Period. Highlighting this year’s class are:

  • José Luis Peña (SS): Ranked No. 42 international prospect by Baseball America and No. 47 by MLB Pipeline.
  • Johanse Gómez (OF): An exceptional athlete with power and speed from St. Thomas.
  • Meykel Baro (SS): Athletic shortstop with speed and power from Havana, Cuba.
  • Ronald Terrero (SS): Advanced approach at the plate from Cuba.
  • Yeison Acosta (C): Switch-hitting catcher projecting to be a plus defender from Gramma, Cuba.
  • Lisandro Sanchez (OF): Five-tool player from Azúa, Dominican Republic.
  • Kelvin Zapata (LHP): Talented left-handed pitcher from Monte Plata, Dominican Republic.
  • Jose Flores (C): Athletic catcher from Guatire, Venezuela.

The class includes players from the Dominican Republic (11), Venezuela (6), Cuba (4), and St. Thomas (1), consisting of eight pitchers, five infielders, five catchers, and four outfielders.

“I am very ecstatic to welcome these remarkable individuals and their families to Birdland,” said Koby Perez, Orioles Vice President of International Scouting and Operations. “We believe that we were able to introduce a new wave of exciting, young players this signing period. These efforts continue to be made possible only through the hard work and commitment of our staff, as well as the continued support of our international operations from Mike Elias and the partnership group.”

Prospect Highlights:

  • José Luis Peña: 16, Bani, Dominican Republic. Solid hit and power combo with a large frame and athletic build. Plus-plus bat speed and a short swing.
  • Johanse Gómez: 17, St. Thomas. Excellent athlete, projecting as a power hitter and plus runner with great range and a plus arm.
  • Meykel Baro: 16, Havana, Cuba. Speed and power with plus bat speed and hard contact. Displays good defensive actions and mobility.
  • Ronald Terrero: 17, Cuba. Advanced approach with quick bat and strong bat-to-ball skills.
  • Yeison Acosta: 17, Gramma, Cuba. Comfortable defender with consistent swing from both sides of the plate.
  • Lisandro Sanchez: 17, Azúa, Dominican Republic. Five-tool player with speed, power, and strong defensive skills.
  • Kelvin Zapata: 16, Monte Plata, Dominican Republic. Fastball reaches 94 mph with a good delivery and competitor mindset.
  • Jose Flores: 17, Guatire, Venezuela. Athletic build, strong defensive skills, good approach at the plate.
