DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers have secured the talents of two-time All-Star infielder Gleyber Torres with a one-year, $15,000,000 contract for the 2025 season, which includes a one-time assignment bonus of $500,000.

Torres joins the Tigers after a successful seven-year stint with the New York Yankees, where he showcased his skills, particularly in the 2024 season. During that campaign, he posted a .257/.330/.378 slash line with 15 home runs, 63 RBI, and 26 doubles. His performance notably improved in the second half, ranking highly among 71 qualified American League hitters in batting average (.292, 12th), on-base percentage (.361, 14th), and walk-to-strikeout ratio (1.72, 16th). Following the All-Star break, he achieved a 124 wRC+ over 61 games.
Throughout his career, Torres has maintained a .265/.334/.441 slash line with 138 home runs and 441 RBI. He has recorded four seasons with at least 2.9 bWAR, achieving his career-best mark of 4.0 bWAR in 2022 when he posted a .761 OPS with 24 homers and 76 RBI over 140 games. A standout season came in 2019, during which he hit a career-high 38 homers and 90 RBI, finishing 17th in MVP voting.
Torres has excelled against lefthanded pitching, ranking 30th in home run rate (5.5%) and 41st in OPS (.854) among 374 qualified American League hitters since his 2018 debut. At 28 years old, his durability is another key attribute, ranking 26th in games played (888) and plate appearances (3,673) among all Major Leaguers since 2018.
During his tenure with the Yankees, Torres gained valuable postseason experience, missing the playoffs just once. In 198 plate appearances over six years of postseason play, he posted a .795 OPS with seven home runs and 25 RBI. Torres has also excelled at controlling the strike zone, ranking fifth in strikeout rate (16.2%) and eighth in walk rate (12.6%) among players with at least 150 postseason plate appearances since 2018.
Torres, originally from Caracas, Venezuela, was initially signed by the Chicago Cubs in 2013.
