WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Athletics have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Luis Severino on a two-year contract through the 2026 season with a player option for 2027, the club announced today.
Severino was 11-7 with a 3.91 ERA and .697 opponents OPS in 31 starts in his first season with the New York Mets last year. He allowed a .243 opponents batting average, struck out 161 batters in 182.0 innings and walked 60. The 30-year-old right-hander also went 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA in three postseason starts for the Mets.
Severino made his Major League debut with New York Yankees in 2015 at the age of 21 and is 65-44 with a 3.81 ERA and .692 opponents OPS in 172 games, including 156 starts, in nine seasons in the majors. He had a 41-25 record and a 3.51 ERA in 96 games over his first four seasons. The native of the Dominican Republic made just three starts in 2019 after spending most of the season on the injured list with right rotator cuff inflammation, and then missed the entire 2020 season after undergoing “Tommy John” surgery. Severino returned to majors with four relief appearances in 2021 and was 12-11 with a 4.65 ERA in 42 games and 197.1 innings over his final three seasons with the Yankees from 2021-23.
Severino is a two-time All-Star (2017 and 2018) and has six years of postseason experience, appearing in 14 games, including 13 starts, for the Yankees (2017-19, 21-22) and Mets (2024). He has two of the top nine single-season strikeout totals in Yankees history, fanning 230 batters in 2017 and 220 in 2018. Severino had his best season in 2018 when he compiled a 19-8 record and a 3.39 ERA.
