TIGER TRACKS

NCAA PLAYOFFS

Ouachita is back in the NCAA Division II playoffs for the sixth time in program history. Other playoffs appearances for the Tigers include the 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022 season. Ouachita is 1-5 all-time in the D2 playoffs, highlighted by a 35-7 win over Indianapolis in 2018 at home to advance to the quarterfinals. Five of the six playoffs games have been at Cliff Harris Stadium in Arkadelphia. This year, the Tigers travel Edmond, Oklahoma to take on the Central Oklahoma Bronchos, outright winners of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. UCO is making its fifth D2 playoffs appearance and first since 2003. The Bronchos own two national titles, both at the NAIA level in 1962 and 1982. In its D2 era, UCO is 3-4 in the playoffs, advancing to the quarterfinals in 1996, 1998, and 2003.

GAC CHAMPS

With Ouachita’s 27-20 win over Henderson State this past Saturday across the street in the 97th Battle of the Ravine, the Tigers earned a share of the 2024 Great American Conference championship. It is Ouachita’s seventh GAC championship, which leads the league that began in 2011. The Tigers also won GAC titles in the inaugural 2011 season, and then again in 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022. The other GAC championship trophies belong to Harding now with four (2016, 2021, 2023, 2024) and Henderson State with three (2012, 2013, 2015). Ouachita has now won 13 overall conference championships also including six Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championships (1931, 1941, 1966, 1970, 1975, and 1982).

TOP 10 BATTLE

With no major upsets in the final week of the 2024 regular season, Ouachita kept its No. 9 national ranking in this week’s American Football Coaches Association Top 25 poll. The Tigers did move up one spot to No. 11 in the latest D2Football.com poll. The Tigers have now been nationally-ranked by the AFCA in 75 of the last 76 polls, reaching as high as No. 3 on two different occasions – late in the 2022 season and earlier this season. Ouachita is one of three teams in the GAC receiving national recognition this week. Harding is No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Southern Arkansas is back in at No. 23 in the AFCA poll. This week’s opponent, UCO, is ranked No. 8 by the AFCA and No. 7 by D2Football.com, giving Ouachita its second top 10 battle of the season. The Tigers beat then-ranked No. 1 Harding 17-13 at home on October 19. Ouachita was ranked No. 9 for that game.

TIGERS, BRONCHOS FEATURED IN NCAA.COM POWER RANKINGS

NCAA.com D2 columnist Wayne Cavadi publishes weekly power rankings that highlight the top 10 teams in the nation. The Tigers have been up and down in Cavadi’s rankings throughout the season, this week coming in at No. 10 to start the postseason: “The Tigers closed the season in the Battle of the Ravine with a much needed win over Henderson State, eliminating the Reddies’ slim hopes of a postseason berth. This spot was close between the Tigers and Western Colorado, but the Tigers are undefeated against teams with a winning record, have a higher strength of schedule, and a higher KPI, so this is a spot where I leaned on the metrics…” Cavadi slotted Central Oklahoma at No. 8 this week: “So, here’s where it gets dicey. The Bronchos lost to Pittsburg State, so in the regional rankings, that gives the Gorillas the edge. However, in the Power 10 rankings, the MIAA champs — the first time the Bronchos have won the MIAA, mind you — have the edge. They defeated an Emporia State team that was in the playoff hunt to close the season and, if Charleston (WV) isn’t the best offense in the land, then the Bronchos are. In a tricky Super Region Three, where six of the top seven are right here inside the Power 10, it will be interesting to see how that offense handles some of the best defenses in all DII football.”

5TH 10-WIN SEASON

Ouachita’s win over Henderson State last Saturday in the 97th Battle of the Ravine gave the program its fifth season of at least 10 wins. A win over UCO on Saturday would mark the fourth season with at least 11 wins. The other 10+ win seasons include 2014 (10-1), 2018 (12-1), 2019 (11-1), and 2022 (11-1).

16TH CONSECUTIVE WINNING SEASON

Ouachita’s win over East Central in week six secured a 16th consecutive winning season for the Tigers, which is the longest streak in program history and continues the longest active streak among all college football programs in the state of Arkansas. Since 2008, Ouachita has posted a 134-41 overall record, featuring four undefeated regular seasons, 11 seasons with at least seven wins, eight seasons with at least nine wins, and five seasons with at least 10 wins, highlighted by the 12-win team in 2018. During this streak, Ouachita has won the GAC championship seven times and has made it to the NCAA D2 playoffs six times, hosting playoff games in 2014, 2018, 2019, and 2022, and advancing to the quarterfinals in 2018. Also a highlight of the past 15 years was a 30-game GAC win streak that stretched from Oct. of 2017 to Sept. of 2021 and an 18-game GAC win streak that stretched from Nov. of 2021 to Oct. of 2023.

SCOUTING THE BRONCHOS

Central Oklahoma enters Saturday’s game at 10-1 overall and outright winners of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The Bronchos nickname originated in 1922 when the common spelling of the word included an ‘h’. UCO’s only loss this season was to Pittsburg State, a 35-21 setback at home on October 26. Just like Ouachita has had close calls in wins over Harding, Southern Arkansas, and Henderson State, UCO has also had its fair share of wins that could have easily gone the other way. The Bronchos escaped Tahlequah with a seven-point win over Northeastern State, then beat Missouri Western by three, and later beat Washburn by just one. UCO boasts the top offense in the nation with an average of nearly 550 yards per game with the majority coming through an air attack at 338 yards per game, which ranks third in D2. The Bronchos rank second in D2 in scoring offense at 47.5 points per game. Statistically speaking, UCO’s defense is one of the worst in the nation, giving up 450 yards and nearly 29 points per game. The Broncho pass defense is second to last in the nation at just over 310 yards allowed per game. UCO is led by Adam Dorrell, who is in his third season in Edmond. Dorrell is the former head coach at Northwest Missouri State, where he led the Bearcats to six NCAA playoff appearances and three D2 national championships.

FIRST MEETING OF 21ST CENTURY

Saturday’s game between Ouachita and UCO is the fifth meeting of all-time between the two schools in football, and the first of the 21st century. The Bronchos lead the series 3-1. The first meeting was in the 1953 season, and according to the Ouachitonian yearbook, the “OBC forward wall kept the Broncs bottled up the entire game” leading to a 13-0 shutout. The series renewed for three years in the late 90s when Ouachita joined the NCAA Division II and competed against UCO in the Lone Star Conference. UCO won all three matchups, including the last meeting in 1999, which was Todd Knight’s first season as head coach for the Tigers. 1953: Ouachita 13, UCO 0 1997: UCO 31, Ouachita 14 1998: UCO 48, Ouachita 7 1999: UCO 41, Ouachita 20
