Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic has the makings of a legendary bout in UFC Heavyweight history. “Bones” Jones is often hailed as the GOAT of mixed martial arts by fans and experts alike, including UFC CEO Dana White. A victory over Miocic at UFC 309 on November 16 could further solidify his legacy.
Jones boasts a record of 27-1-1, though there’s talk that the UFC may overturn his only loss. That defeat came back in 2009, due to a disqualification for illegal elbow strikes.
The no-contest on Jones’ record stems from a fight against Daniel Cormier, which he initially won by KO. However, it was later overturned after Jones tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). That fight was for the UFC Light Heavyweight title, a belt Jones held until 2020, when he took a hiatus before moving to the Heavyweight division in 2023.
Jones made a remarkable debut in the Heavyweight division against Ciryl Gane, quickly securing a win via guillotine choke in just 124 seconds.
Now, he faces Stipe Miocic, one of the last prominent figures from the glory days of the heavyweight division.
Miocic (20-4), a 42-year-old heavyweight, last fought in March 2021, when Francis Ngannou defeated him with a second-round KO. Miocic’s most recent victory was in August 2020, when he won a unanimous decision against Daniel Cormier. His last finish also came against Cormier a year earlier.
Miocic is known for his size, strength, and diverse skill set. He’s an excellent wrestler with impressive grappling abilities, though he often prefers striking. In his prime, Miocic was one of the most formidable fighters in the sport. However, in 2024, it remains to be seen if he can overcome a possible GOAT of martial arts like Jon Jones.
