NBA Preview: Philadelphia Sixers (1-4) vs Phoenix Suns (5-1)

The Phoenix Suns have started strong under new coach Mike Budenholzer, winning their last four games and five of six overall as they head into Monday’s home matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 76ers have struggled early this season, losing four of five while missing stars Joel Embiid and Paul George, both sidelined with knee injuries.

Phoenix had a roller-coaster performance on Saturday, ultimately securing a 103-97 victory over the visiting Portland Trail Blazers. The Suns trailed by four points at halftime but dominated the third quarter, outscoring Portland 44-18 and leading by as many as 26 points early in the fourth before the Trail Blazers staged a furious comeback.

In the third quarter, Phoenix shot 9 of 18 from beyond the arc, while Portland managed just 1 of 11.

Devin Booker led the way with 28 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, while Kevin Durant added 21 points. Grayson Allen chipped in with 18 points and four 3-pointers off the bench.

The 76ers are struggling without Embiid and George. They lost 124-107 at home to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday, with Tyrese Maxey scoring 23 points on a night when Philadelphia was outrebounded 52-33.

Embiid drew attention postgame by shouting at a reporter in the locker room and eventually shoving him. The target was Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Marcus Hayes, who recently questioned Embiid’s professionalism and ability to stay in shape. Hayes also mentioned Embiid’s son and late brother, both named Arthur, which further enraged the player.

Embiid, still dealing with the left knee he had surgery on in February, stated that he is doing everything he can to return to the court and is frustrated by those who suggest otherwise.

The teams split their two meetings last season, with the home team winning each time.
