NBA Preview: New York Knicks (3-2) vs Houston Rockets (3-3)

The acquisition of Karl-Anthony Towns during training camp allowed the New York Knicks to pair another exceptional scorer with Jalen Brunson, whose standout performance last season propelled the Knicks into the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference.

While the integration of their talents will take time, the Knicks have already seen glimpses of their potential. They continue their four-game road trip on Monday against the Houston Rockets.  Just days after Towns recorded 44 points and 13 rebounds in a road victory over the Miami Heat, Brunson scored 36 points and dished out five assists in a 128-98 win over the Detroit Pistons on Friday.

Offensively, the Knicks appear to be just scratching the surface. Defensively, their reputation under coach Tom Thibodeau remains strong. Central to their defense is versatile forward OG Anunoby, whose all-around excellence complemented Brunson’s performance against the Pistons.  Anunoby contributed 21 points, six assists, four rebounds, and two steals in the victory.

Since joining the Knicks via trade last season, his impact was immediate. Injuries undermined his influence in the postseason, but now fully settled in, it’s clear how critical Anunoby’s role will be moving forward.

Inconsistency remains a challenge for the Rockets, who followed a road victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday—despite nearly squandering a 23-point lead—with a 127-121 overtime loss to the Golden State Warriors on Saturday. Houston rallied from a 31-point deficit to force overtime, even taking a one-point lead in the fourth quarter.

The rollercoaster began with the series opener. The Rockets blew an 18-point lead in a loss to the Charlotte Hornets before securing a 20-point win over the Memphis Grizzlies. They never trailed during their 106-101 road win over the San Antonio Spurs on Oct. 28 but had to hold on after leading by 21 points late in the third quarter.

This erratic play has made the Rockets difficult to predict. Their in-game variance presents a conundrum: praise for their resilience or criticism for their tendency to fall into massive holes or blow significant leads.

Houston ended an eight-game losing streak against the Knicks with a 105-103 victory on Feb. 12.
