Sam Houston Notes
OLD SCHOOL KATFIGHT TO BE RENEWED AT NRG STADIUM
• One week after moving to 1-0 in Conference USA play, the Kats will step out of conference one final time this year when it travels back to NRG Stadium on Saturday to take on Texas State n Sam Houston is 11-2 all-time in games played at NRG Stadium, having played a game there every year since 2010 apart from the COVID-altered 2020 season
• Sam Houston is 18-27-1 all-time in games played in the City of Houston, including 1-0 this year after opening the year with a win at Rice
• The Kats have drawn home attendances of 15,134 and 13,059 in the last 2 weeks, both crowds which rank in the top 5 all-time at SHSU. The total of 28,193 in consecutive weeks is the most in Bearkat history for consecutive home games
• Sam Houston is averaging 32.0 points per game in its 3 wins, all over G5 teams
• Sam Houston will be wearing another set of throwback decals on their helmets on Saturday, with Bearkats in arching white script with a white stripe down the middle of the orange hats. The arching script mark originally was worn from 1989-93 on a navy blue helmet before Sam Houston moved to orange helmets in 1994. The mark remained on the side of the hats through the 1996 season, while the orange headwear carries on to today.
TEAM NOTES
• The game vs Hawaii officially drew 15,134 fans to Bowers Stadium. That attendance is the second-largest in Bowers Stadium history and the most since 16,148 were tallied in October of 1994 when the Bearkats hosted Steve McNair and Alcorn State in a regionally-televised game on ABC
• The Kats have captured 3 CUSA weekly honors this year thru 4 games. Quarterback Hunter Watson and kicker Christian Pavon earned Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week after the Kats’ Week 1 win over Rice before defensive back Caleb Weaver was the Defensive Player of the Week after his effort in the win over Hawaii
• Sam Houston has already put up 110 points in 2024, a stark contrast to its early offensive output in early in 2023. In fact, the Kats did not score their first TD of 2023 until Game 3 and did not surpass 100 total points until Game 8 of the year
• KC Keeler has to be happy with his team’s discipline thru 4 games as the Kats have been one of the least penalized teams in the country. SHSU is averaging just 3.75 penalties per game so far this year, which is tied for seventh best in the country and the best among teams in CUSA n Sam Houston is competing in its second season in the FBS and its first with full bowl eligibility. The Kats completed their 2-year transition to full-fledged FBS status following the completion of the 2023 season
LAST ONES STANDING
The move by Sam Houston to the FBS level following the 2021 season is arguably the most transcendent decision made in the history of Bearkat Athletics. Much of that was due to the Kats claiming the FCS national title in the Spring of 2021. There are still 7 players remaining from that team. Those players are: AIfe Adeyi, Noah Smith, Trey Fields, Ethan Hagler, Ysidro Mascorro, Jevon Leon and Briceon Hayes
Liberty at App State
(ESPN+) 2:30 p.m.
Liberty Notes
STORYLINES
• Liberty (4-0, 2-0 CUSA) will look to remain unbeaten when it travels to Appalachian State (2-2, 0-1 Sun Belt) for the first time in 10 years on Saturday.
• This will mark the 11th meeting between Liberty and App State in a series that dates back to 1987 but the first with both teams playing at the FBS level. The Flames are just 3-7 all-time against the Mountaineers but won the most recent meeting, 55-48 (OT) in Boone on Oct. 11, 2014.
• Liberty has won three straight matchups with Sun Belt foes, moving to 10-3 all-time against members of the conference.
• Liberty overcame a 17-0 deficit and a 4:37 weather delay to defeat East Carolina 35-24 in a game which ended at 2 a.m. Sunday morning at Williams Stadium. That marked the Flames’ 16th straight regular-season win. If Liberty is victorious Saturday, it would have its first-ever seven-game road winning streak.
• Jamey Chadwell is in his second year at Liberty. He is 17-1 with the Flames and owns a 48-7 coaching record dating back to the start of 2020.
• RB Quinton Cooley rushed 19 times for 105 yards and a game-sealing 21-yard TD with 2:00 left in the win over ECU. He has posted three 100-yard games this year and is CUSA’s leading rusher (371 yards).
• WR Reese Smith enjoyed a breakout game vs. ECU, tying the Liberty single-game record of three receiving TDs and posting a team-high 80 receiving yards.
• CB Dexter Ricks, Jr. notched an INT for the second straight game, one of two turnovers forced by the Flames in the fourth quarter against East Carolina.
A LIBERTY WIN WOULD…
• Extend the Flames’ program-record regular-season winning streak to 17 while breaking a tie for the longest road winning streak in program history with seven straight away victories. • Enable the Flames to start 5-0 for the second year in a row and the third time in the last five seasons. • Be the Flames’ second straight victory over Appalachian State (also 2014), improving the Flames to 4-7 all-time against App State and 4-5 in Boone, N.C. • Mark the Flames’ second win this season over a team who played in a 2023 bowl game (also at New Mexico State). • Improve Liberty to 11-3 all-time against Sun Belt teams (at time of meeting), including 4-0 since the start of the 2022 season. • Represent the Flames’ 19th victory in their last 21 September contests (dating back to 2019). • Mark the Flames’ first win in North Carolina since Oct. 28, 2017 at Gardner-Webb, snapping a two-game losing skid in the Tar Heel State.
“4 DOWNS” WITH APP STATE
Liberty and Appalachian State are matching up on the gridiron for the 11th time but the first with both as FBS members. App State is one of four current FBS squads Liberty has faced 10 or more times in program history, also including James Madison (18), Coastal Carolina (15) and UCF (11). The Mountaineers are the most frequently played opponent on Liberty’s 2024 schedule.
Liberty will attempt to give App State its first back-to-back home losses since Oct. 4 and 11, 2014, when the Mountaineers dropped consecutive contests in Boone to South Alabama and the Flames. Liberty and App State have both made bowl game appearances every year they have competed at the FBS level with full bowl eligibility. The Flames have rallied from deficits of 14 points or more to win twice this season (at New Mexico State, vs. East Carolina).
Reese Smith tied the program record with three receiving TDs against East Carolina on Saturday, surpassing his career total of two entering the contest. His efforts helped fuel a comeback from a 17-0 deficit in a game which was delayed 4:37 due to weather. All 35 of the Flames’ points against the Pirates were scored after midnight.
Liberty has boasted a 100-yard rusher in all four games to begin 2024. Quinton Cooley reached 100 vs. Campbell, New Mexico State and East Carolina, while Billy Lucas did so vs. UTEP. This is the first time since 2008 Liberty has had a 100-yard rusher in each of a season’s first four contests.
LAST MEETING WITH APP STATE
OCT. 11, 2014 LIBERTY 55, APPALACHIAN STATE 48 (OT)
BOONE, N.C. (KIDD BREWER STADIUM)
• After App State missed a potential game-winning 32-yard FG at the end of regulation, Josh Woodrum completed a nine-yard TD pass to Darrin Peterson in the first overtime to put the Flames ahead. • Jacob Hagen then intercepted a pass from App State QB Taylor Lamb in the end zone to complete the victory. • The teams combined for 1,129 yards of offense and the game featured eight lead changes. • At the time, it marked Liberty’s third win over an FBS opponent in program history and its first in four years.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Liberty plays five of its remaining eight regular-season games on the road. The Flames’s current six-game road winning streak is tied for its longest in program history, as Liberty went 6-0 on the road in 1997. Saturday’s opponent, App State, snapped Liberty’s previous six-game road winning streak, defeating the Flames 28-19 in the 1998 season opener in Boone.
REGULAR SEASON ROLL
Liberty carries a program-record 16-game regular-season winning streak into today’s matchup. The Flames were the only Group of Five team to go undefeated in the regular season last year. Only Georgia (42 games) owns a longer active regular-season winning streak than Liberty among FBS schools. So far this season, Florida State, Michigan and Washington have all seen their lengthy regular-season winning streaks snapped.
NORTH CAROLINA NOTES
This will be Liberty’s 92nd game versus a varsity opponent from North Carolina, including its third this year. The Flames are 45-44-2 all-time against North Carolina opponents, including 16-27-2 away. Liberty has lost its last two games in the Tar Heel State (2020 at NC State, 2022 at Wake Forest). By contrast, the Flames have won 15 straight home games versus North Carolina teams since a 27-24 loss to Gardner-Webb Oct. 21, 2006.
QUICK SERIES HISTORY
Appalachian State holds a 7-3 all-time lead over Liberty. However, all three of the Flames’ wins over the Mountaineers have come in Boone, N.C., where App State holds a 5-3 advantage. App State had won five straight meetings (1998-02) before the Flames knocked off the Mountaineers 55- 48 in overtime on Oct. 11, 2014, the last meeting to date.
SUN BELT SUCCESS
Liberty is 10-3 all-time against Sun Belt Opponents, at time of meeting. That includes bowl wins over Sun Belt foes Georgia Southern (in 2019) and Coastal Carolina (in 2020) at back-to-back Cure Bowl appearances. The Flames have won each of their last three meetings against Sun Belt teams, including wins at Southern Miss and Old Dominion in 2022 and a home victory over ODU last year.
QUICK STATS
Liberty ranks 29th in the nation in total offense (456.8), while App State is 123rd in total defense (453.3). The Mountaineers are 19th nationally, averaging 307.5 passing yards per game, while the Flames allow just 200 passing yards per contest.
FLAMES QUARTER
The Flames are outscoring opponents 56-14 in the fourth quarter so far this season. That +42 scoring margin is Liberty’s largest of any quarter this year. That includes a 21-point fourth-quarter surge to come back for a 30-24 win at New Mexico State, Sept. 7. The Flames outscored ECU 14-0 on Saturday in the fourth. Liberty is 13-0 when leading after three quarters last under Jamey Chadwell, continuing a trend of Chadwell-coached teams. Chadwell’s team has closed out the game with a win each of the last 42 times it took a lead into the fourth quarter, since giving up a 31-25 advantage in a 39-38 Coastal Carolina loss at Arkansas, Nov. 4, 2017.

In May, season tickets sold out for the third straight year for a program that set Sun Belt season attendance records in 2021, 2022 and 2023. • Under head coach Shawn Clark, App State is one of five G5 programs (and 14 FBS programs) with at least three nine-win seasons since the start of 2020. • With 1,230 passing yards (No. 8 in FBS) and six TD passes this year, including a career-high 424 yards at ECU, Joey Aguilar is the nation’s only returning FBS QB who had 33-plus TD passes and 3,700-plus passing yards in 2023. His 15 TD passes to either tie a game or give his team a lead led the country in 2023, and he has two more of those TD passes in 2024. • Falling behind 16-0 after one quarter at ECU, App State posted its largest comeback win since a Sun Belt game at Idaho in 2017, when the Mountaineers overcame a 20-0 deficit to win 23-20.
MORE STORYLINES
• Shawn Clark’s team ranked 33rd nationally by returning 68 percent of its production from 2023. The roster had 34 scholarship newcomers entering 2024, including 15 from the transfer portal. • The only FBS programs in the country with four conference championship game appearances in the last six seasons are App State, Alabama, Boise State, Clemson, Georgia, Oregon and Utah. Of the program’s last 15 losses, 10 have been one-possession games. • Under head coach Shawn Clark, App State is 18-1 when winning the turnover battle. • App State led the Sun Belt with 14 alums on NFL rosters in 2023, and there are 13 football alums on current NFL rosters.
OFFENSE
• QB Joey Aguilar, four of the top five running backs and five of the top seven pass-catching targets returned from 2023 for an offense with one returning starter on the offensive line. • For the first time since 2017, when Frank Ponce had a fourth straight year coaching quarterback Taylor Lamb, App State opened a season with the same starting quarterback and quarterbacks coach from the previous season. Zac Thomas played under Ponce in 2018, then had different coordinators in 2019 and 2020. Chase Brice played for different coordinators in 2021 (Ponce for his second stint in Boone) and 2022. • In addition to his 33 TD passes in 2023, a total that ranked fifth nationally, QB Joey Aguilar also set school records of 3,757 passing yards and 4,002 yards of total offense in 2023. Replacing the injured starter in the first half of the 2023 opener, he threw a TD pass on his first FBS play by hitting Kaedin Robinson for a 32-yard score. Aguilar then threw an 83-yard TD pass to Christan Horn on the second offensive snap (and first pass) of 2024. • At ECU, Joey Aguilar threw for a career-high 424 yards and two TDs, including a 36-yard, go-ahead score to Makai Jackson late in the third quarter. His 32 completions and 47 pass attempts were also career highs. The 424 passing yards set a record for a road performance by an App State QB and rank as the third-best total in program history, behind only the 433 yards from Armanti Edwards against South Carolina State in a 2008 playoff game and the 427 yards from Taylor Lamb against Coastal Carolina in 2017. • Kaedin Robinson opened 2024 with eight catches for 103 yards after tying for the Sun Belt lead last year with 10 TD receptions while catching 67 passes for 905 yards — the most single-season receiving yards by an App State player in the FBS era. He had another 100-yard game with a career-high 129 yards on seven catches at ECU, and his six-catch, 85-yard effort against South Alabama gave him at least one catch in 28 consecutive games. • TE Eli Wilson had a momentum-swinging, 34-yard TD catch in the 2024 opener and App State’s first TD at ECU. He ranked in the top three among Sun Belt tight ends in catches (34), yards (350) and touchdown catches (five) in 2023. • WR Makai Jackson scored in each of the first three games. He scored on a 47-yard end-around in the opener, led the team with an FBS career-high six catches in the loss at Clemson (including a 17-yard TD) and scored the go-ahead TD at ECU during a six-catch, 86-yard performance. • Returning from a 2023 preseason injury to play in the final six games of last year, RB Anderson Castle gained 80 yards on seven carries (only one after halftime) in the loss at Clemson and made his second career start at ECU. His late 10-yard run allowed App State to run out the clock.
DEFENSE

New Mexico State Notes
TURNING THE TIDE
On Saturday, the Aggies will be seeking their third straight victory over their in-state rivals from Albuquerque. This would mark the Aggies’ first three-game win streak in the Rio Grande Rivalry since winning in 2009, 2010 and 2011. In total, NM State has stacked three or more consecutive wins just five times in the 113-year history During the Aggies’ current two-game win streak, NM State is outscoring New Mexico by an average of 11 points after earning a 21-9 win in 2022 and a 27-17 win in 2023. A win this weekend would also mark the first time since 1963 and 1965 that the Aggies would earn back-to-back home wins over the Lobos – a feat that has only happened five time in the history of the rivalry.
SIMILAR SPOT
The Aggies carry a 1-3 record into the meeting with the Lobos. Despite recording two of the most successful seasons in program history during the 2022 and 2023 campaigns, the Aggies are familiar with slow starts. During a 2022 season which was capped off by a win in the Quick Lane bowl to finalize their record at 7-6, the Aggies entered the Rio Grande Rivalry with a 1-5 record. A 21-9 Aggie victory ended a streak of three consecutive losses to the Lobos and ignited a back half of the season in which the Aggies finished 6-1 to earn the program’s first bowl bid since the 2017 campaign. One year later, the Aggies would travel to Albuquerque with a 1-2 record in hand. NM State would then improve to 2-2 with a 27-17 win at University Stadium. After dropping the following game on the road at Hawaii, the Aggies would fall to 2-3 prior to kicking things in gear to finish the regular season with a 10-3 record. While Tony Sanchez and staff would not opt to be in a position with one win through four games, it is a space that the Aggies have proven they can bounce back from. In fact, in six of the Aggies’ last seven seasons that resulted in plus-.500 winning percentage, NM State held a losing record through at least five games. Previous seven winning seasons Year Start Finish 2023 2-3 10-5 (Isleta New Mexico Bowl) 2022 1-5 7-6 (Quick Lane Bowl) 2017 2-4 7-6 (Arizona Bowl) 2002 1-2 7-5 1999 3-4 6-5 1992 2-3 6-5 1978 2-3 6-5
RETURN TO FORM
After missing the Sam Houston game due to injury last Saturday, center Canaan Yarro is expected to return as the leader of the Aggie offensive line against the Lobos. The senior captain from Provo, Utah, is currently tied with AJ Vaipulu and Kordell David for the most starts as an Aggie at 30. Prior to the injury, Yarro had started the Aggies’ previous 29 games. With Yarro sidelined, the Aggie front line saw four positions change amid the starting lineup as AJ Vaipulu shifted to center which left starting right guard BJ Tolo in the left guard spot. Tolo’s movement then led to starting right tackle Louie Canepa getting the start at right guard while Canepa’s primary position was filled by Cedric Claiborne. The Aggie adjustments were not limited to just the offensive line as Arkansas transfer Hunter Talley also missed the CUSA matchup due to injury which provided an opportunity for backup tight end Jerry Lydiatt. Lydiatt submitted easily his best collegiate performance as he finished the night with four catches for 22 yards the Aggies’ lone touchdown.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Offensive Player of the Week –
Reese Smith, Liberty Smith entered Saturday’s 35-24 win over East Carolina without a touchdown in a Flames uniform and just two career receiving touchdowns but hauled in six passes for 80 yards and a program-record tying three touchdowns to help Liberty rally from a 17-0 deficit. His second touchdown grab gave the Flames their first lead (21-17) with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter, and his final score gave Liberty the lead for good midway through the final frame. Smith became the 13th player in program history with three receiving touchdowns in a game and now leads CUSA and ranks 30th nationally in receiving touchdowns.
Defensive Player of the Week –
Devonte’ Mathews, WKU Mathews came up big for the Hilltoppers in their 26-21 win over Toledo on Saturday, intercepting two passes in the final two minutes when the Rockets were threatening to score. The first came with Toledo facing a fourth-and-15 from the WKU 20-yard line, when he picked off a pass attempt in the end zone with 1:20 remaining. After a turnover allowed Toledo to get the ball back, he intercepted his second pass at the Tops’ one-yard line with 18 seconds remaining to clinch the victory. Mathews, WKU’s leading tackler through four games this season, finished with four tackles in the win, including 0.5 for loss.
Special Teams Player of the Week –
Cole Maynard, WKU Maynard played an important role in Saturday’s win over Toledo, averaging 50.8 yards per punt on six attempts in the game – the fifth-highest average in a single game in program history of players who had at least four attempts. He sent four punts 50-plus yards and had two downed inside the 20-yard line. His long was 57 yards, which he did twice, but his most impactful came with under a minute to play in the third quarter when he pinned Toledo at its own two-yard line. The WKU defense recorded a safety on the next play, kicking off a stretch of 16 unanswered points in the comeback victory.
PANTHERS PILE UP PICKS FIU
leads CUSA and is tied for eighth nationally in passes intercepted with eight, including five picks in a 52-16 victory over Central Michigan. That marks the most in a game by an FBS team this season. Six different Panthers have intercepted a pass so far this season, and two have returned theirs for touchdowns in linebacker Travion Barnes and defensive back Brian Blades II. FIU is also tied for 23rd nationally in turnovers gained this season
METHODIC-OWL OFFENSE
Kennesaw State has ground down opposing defenses down with six scoring drives of at least 11 plays, including an 18-play, 75-yard march against San Jose State that culminated with a Preston Daniels touchdown run. Daniels also capped off a 16-play, 74-yard drive against Louisiana on Sept. 7.
FLAMES QUARTER
Liberty has turned the fourth quarter into the “Flames Quarter,” using the final frame to pull away in each of its four victories to begin the year. The Flames are averaging 14 points, while their opponents are averaging just 3.5 points. Liberty is outgaining its opponents by an average margin of 152-56. Quarterback Kaidon Salter is 21-27 for 288 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and has led the offense to a 78.6 percent (11-14) conversion rate on third downs. Additionally, the Flames have punted just once.
FLAGS FEW AND FAR BETWEEN
LA Tech and Sam Houston have displayed great discipline through the opening four weeks of the season as both rank in the top-10 in fewest penalties per game and the top-15 in fewest penalty yards per game. The Bulldogs have drawn just 12 penalties for 90 yards through three games, while the Bearkats have been whistled for just 15 penalties for 140 yards. through four games. In their three victories, Sam Houston committed just nine penalties for a total of 105 yards.
AGGIES STAY PERFECT IN RZ
After converting a pair of red zone opportunities against Sam Houston, NM State maintained its flawless mark within the opponent’s 20-yard line. The Aggies are 8-8 on the year on red zone scoring chances with five touchdowns and three field goals. They are one of just 17 teams with a perfect conversion rate. Running back Seth McGowan has accounted for three of the five red zone scores with a pair of rushing touchdowns and a touchdown reception.
MINERS ON THE MOVE
Scotty Walden’s “Blue Blaze” offense is poised to mirror the fiery energy of UTEP’s first-year coach as he plans to get a play in every 12-14 seconds. “Fast, physical and fearless” is another saying around the Miners’ camp as they complete a 180 on the program’s offensive philosophy. Other focuses will be moving receiving tight ends to wideout, emphasizing blocking tight ends and getting the ball out fast.
VELTKAMP STAKES HIS CLAIM
In his first career start, WKU quarterback Caden Veltkamp accounted for three touchdowns to lead the Hilltoppers to a 26-21 victory over Toledo. In his last three games with at least 10 pass attempts (dating back to last year’s Famous Toastery Bowl), he has completed 87-112 passes (77.7 percent) for 1,023 yards and 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. He currently ranks seventh in completion percentage (.739), 15th in passing efficiency (176.1), 18th in points responsible for per game (18.0) and 19th in yards per pass attempt (9.43).
