CFB-D2: Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Week 0 Preview

The 2024 football season officially kicks off this week. The SIAC will participate in five nationally televised/streamed games. Here’s information on where to watch the games.

CENTRAL STATE AT MOREHEAD STATE – ESPN+ 
Thursday, August 29 at 6 p.m. ET

Central State, led by third-year head coach Kevin Porter, will open its season on the road against Morehead State at Jayne Stadium. The Marauders are coming off a 5-5 (4-4 SIAC) season. 

The defense will be anchored by the team’s 2023 standouts: Mike WhiteCarlos CarterDylan Purry and Jalil Lenore. White returns after leading the conference in both sacks and forced fumbles last season. Carter topped the conference in fumble recoveries, followed by Purry.

Morehead State finished last season 4-7 overall and 3-5 in Pioneer League play.

FORT VALLEY STATE VS. CLARK ATLANTA – TheGrio 
Saturday, August 31 at 1 p.m. ET

Fort Valley State, led by head coach Shawn Gibbs, finished 6-2 in the SIAC and 8-3 overall, including a postseason victory over Johnson C. Smith.

The team’s roster features five preseason All-SIAC selections, including Brandon MarshallKamari BlankumseeDaniel GibbsDeJuan Bell and Malik Harp.

Under the leadership of new head coach Teddy KeatonClark Atlanta seeks to rebound from a challenging 2023 season (0-10, 0-8 SIAC). The Panthers’ roster features five preseason All-SIAC selections, including Elijah ShareefDavid WrightMarques ShermanDahlil WilkinsCamron Ivey and a slate of SIAC transfers.

MOREHOUSE VS. EDWARD WATERS – ESPN+  
Saturday, August 31 at 3 p.m. ET

Morehouse ended last season 1-9 overall and 1-7 in the SIAC. First-year head coach Terance Mathis looks to add more games to the win column this season. The roster features preseason All-SIAC second-team selections Isaiah Reaves and Seve Spruill II.

Edward Waters, led by fourth-year head coach Toriano Morgan, is coming off their strongest SIAC performance since rejoining the league in 2021. The Tigers finished 6-4 overall and 5-3 in conference play last season.

Returners Dylan LampkinJamari PierreWidmyer Garçon and Johnny Jones received preseason All-SIAC first-team selections.

KENTUCKY STATE VS. VIRGINIA UNION – HBCU GO
Saturday, August 31 at 3 p.m. ET

Kentucky State is entering its second season with head coach Felton Huggins Jr. The Thorobreds finished last season at 3-7 overall and 2-6 against SIAC opponents. Offensive returner Walter McClinton II received a preseason All-SIAC second-team selection.

Virginia Union, the reigning CIAA champion, went 10-2 overall and 7-1 in conference play last season.

BENEDICT VS. VIRGINIA STATE – NFL Network
Black College Hall of Fame Classic
Sunday, September 1 at 4 p.m. ET

Benedict, the defending SIAC champion, went 11-1 overall and 8-0 in the SIAC last season. The Tigers are looking for continued success this season with new head coach Ron Dickerson Jr. The team will be led by preseason All-SIAC selections Aaron Miller and Lucas Wynn.

Virginia State finished last season 8-2 overall and 6-2 in CIAA play.

TUSKEGEE VS. JOHNSON C. SMITH – ESPNU  
Red Tails Classic
Sunday, September 1 at 7 p.m. ET

Under the direction of second-year head coach Aaron JamesTuskegee went 7-4 overall and 6-2 in SIAC play during its 2023 campaign. The Golden Tigers’ roster bolsters six All-SIAC preseason selections, including Malik MooreMikael King Jr., Elliott HowellJarell Culberth, Terence Maize and Rossie Grimes. King was also named preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

Johnson C. Smith finished last season 7-4 overall and 6-2 in CIAA play.
