A few years ago, Tony Ferguson was thought of as one of the best lightweights on the planet, if not the very best. In fact, some MMA fans still believe that he’d be the one to beat Khabib Nurmagomedov had their fight come to fruition. But it did not happen, first because of the injuries “El Cucuy” suffered, then because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
And since, Ferguson has fallen from grace. His overall record is 25-10, which isn’t too bad, but what’s problematic is that seven of those losses happened in his last seven fights.
Some believe that fighting for 16+ years has taken a toll on his mental state and that at the age of 40, it’s time for Ferguson to retire. But he doesn’t want to do that unless he wins a fight one more time.
He’s only three and a half years younger than Tony Ferguson, but Michael Chiesa seems to be in much better physical and mental shape than him. Chiesa’s recent record isn’t great, with three losses in a row, but he looks ready to get back on the winning track.
“Maverick” is 16-7 overall with 10 wins by submission. He also has 5 losses by this method, which is proof that he likes to challenge his opponents to grappling duels. Sometimes he wins those duels, sometimes he doesn’t. It’s very likely that he will try to take the fight with Ferguson to the ground and finish his opponent there with a submission. The good news for him is that he’s bigger and stronger than Ferguson.
