RUIDOSO, NM – Ruidoso Downs Race Track is in recovery mode following severe flooding that swept through the area over the weekend, forcing evacuations near the Rio Ruidoso and prompting road closures across Lincoln County. Significant water damage and debris disrupted the racetrack’s operations just days ahead of one of its most anticipated events—the Rainbow Derby and Rainbow Oaks trials.

Track Repairs and Emergency Response

Crews worked urgently to clear mud and debris from the racing surface. Excavators were deployed on-site to widen and deepen the river channel bordering the racetrack, aiming to prevent future flood overflow.

“Our crew has done an outstanding job preserving the integrity of the track base,” said Rick Baugh, General Manager of Ruidoso Downs Casino and Race Track. “But today’s additional flooding complicated those efforts. We’re committed to resuming racing by next weekend.”

Baugh added that the venue is working closely with federal, state, and local agencies to ensure thorough cleanup and safety for both racing personnel and spectators.

Racing Schedule Under Review

On Tuesday, the New Mexico Racing Commission held an emergency meeting to assess possible adjustments to the current racing schedule. At the top of the agenda: the future of the Rainbow Derby trials, set for Saturday, July 26, and the Rainbow Oaks, scheduled for Sunday, July 27.

“We’re in ongoing discussions with our horsemen and commission members. A final decision on the Rainbow Derby trials will be made as soon as possible,” said Baugh.

About the Rainbow Series

  • Rainbow Derby – Grade 1 event with a $800,000 purse, representing the second leg of the Quarter Horse Triple Crown
  • Rainbow Oaks – For three-year-old fillies, carrying a $482,000 purse

Both finals are slated for the Zia Festival, scheduled for July 20–21 at Ruidoso Downs, though ongoing weather challenges may continue to influence event timing.

Recent Disruptions

While Ruidoso Futurity trials were successfully held on Friday and Saturday, the final two trials were canceled due to rising floodwaters. Officials are evaluating whether Thursday’s regular racing program can proceed safely.

Located in the Sierra Blanca mountain range, Ruidoso Downs is no stranger to seasonal weather shifts. This year’s unexpected monsoons, however, have tested the venue’s resilience more than most.
