Rose Namajunas is widely considered one of the greatest female fighters of her generation. She’s 12-6 overall, which is very impressive, especially given that seven of her UFC fights were championship fights.
Speaking of which, she’s a former Strawweight champ who used to rule the division in two stints. However, after losing the championship belt to Carla Esparza in 2022, she decided to move up a weight class.
In September 2023, she made her flyweight debut against Manon Fiorot. The French fighter is bigger and much stronger than Thug Rose, so it’s no surprise she beat her up, winning by unanimous decision in the end.
In her second flyweight fight, Rose won against Amanda Ribas, but there’s a caveat. Neither fighter looked particularly impressive in that bout, with each suffering only minor damage. And let’s not forget that Ribas is another small flyweight who probably belongs in the strawweight division.
Tracy Cortez was originally meant to fight Miranda Maverick at UFC Denver on July 13. Maverick is famous for being great in the clinch, which is why Cortez probably spent the last couple of weeks working on her grappling.
But that shouldn’t worry her anymore as she’s fighting against Namajunas, who last won by submission in 2017. Instead, this is probably going to be a striking duel. Is this good news for Cortez? It should be, especially given that she put on a striking masterclass in her previous fight. Last September, she beat Jasmine Jasudavicious in a fight that saw her land 103 significant strikes – the highest number in her entire career.
