Philadelphia Phillies finalize four roster transactions

Prior to tonight’s game against the Miami Marlins, the Phillies announced the following roster moves:

  • Placed first baseman Bryce Harper on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain
  • Placed designated hitter Kyle Schwarber on the 10-day injured list with a left groin strain
  • Returned infielder Kody Clemens from his rehab assignment with triple-A Lehigh Valley and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list
  • Recalled outfielder Johan Rojas from Lehigh Valley

Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcements.

Harper, 31, has slashed .303/.399/.582 (.981 OPS) in 76 games this season, going 87-for-287 with 20 doubles, 20 home runs, 58 RBI, four stolen bases and 47 walks in 336 plate appearances. This month, among National League players, he ranks first in hits (34), OPS (1.166) and extra-base hits (17), and second in batting average (.375), on-base percentage (.452) and slugging percentage (.714). Harper was also named National League Player of the Month for May and was the NL’s leading vote-getter for the 2024 All-Star Game.

Originally selected by the Washington Nationals in the first round (1st overall) of the 2010 MLB Draft, Harper signed with the Phillies as a free agent on March 2, 2019.

Schwarber, 31, has posted a slash line of .250/.373/.447 (.820 OPS) this season in 79 games (367 plate appearances). In 17 games since June 9, he has produced an OPS of 1.096 with four doubles, six home runs, 13 RBI and 13 walks. Schwarber also leads the NL in walk rate (16.1%), walks (59) and plate appearances. He was named as an All-Star finalist, finishing the first phase of voting with the second-most votes among NL designated hitters, behind only Los Angeles’ Shohei Ohtani.

Originally selected by the Chicago Cubs in the first round (4th overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft, Schwarber signed with the Phillies as a free agent on March 20, 2022.

Clemens, 28, has appeared in 17 games across two stints with the Phillies this year and slashed .256/.293/.615 with a 149 OPS+, three doubles, one triple, three home runs and 10 RBI in 41 plate appearances. In his rehab assignment with Lehigh Valley, he posted a .923 OPS in 26 plate appearances.

Clemens was acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the Detroit Tigers on Jan. 7, 2023. He was originally selected by the Tigers in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft.

Rojas, 23, slashed .235/.271/.295 in 58 games (196 plate appearances) with the Phillies this season. He has played in 117 games for the Phillies since making his major league debut on July 15, 2023, posting a .265/.303/.355 slash line with 16 Defensive Runs Saved in that span. In eight games for Lehigh Valley since being optioned on June 17, Rojas slashed .382/.417/.500 with a .917 OPS in 38 plate appearances.

Rojas was originally signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent on Jan. 18, 2018.
