WHAT TO WATCH FOR

THE BATTLE FOR THE BELT

In-state foes South Alabama and Troy will square off in the Battle for the Belt rivalry game at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, on ESPN2. The Trojans lead the all-time series 8-3—including five-straight wins dating back to 2018. Reigning Sun Belt champion Troy is 1-of-3 Sun Belt programs to have already clinched bowl eligibility on the season. Both teams feature one of the nation’s top offensive weapons in junior wide receiver Caullin Lacy for the Jaguars and junior running back Kimani Vidal for the Trojans. Lacy ranks second in the nation with 957 receiving yards on the year, while Vidal sits third in the country with 994 rushing yards. Vidal can also become Troy’s all-time leading rusher with a 99-yard game on Thursday.

RISING

Fresh off its highest-ever rankings in the national polls, No. 23/24 James Madison will visit Georgia State at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, on ESPN2. The Dukes are riding an 11-game winning streak—the fifth-longest active streak in the nation—and are 1-of-8 remaining unbeaten teams in the country. Georgia State is 1-of-3 Sun Belt programs to have already clinched bowl eligibility on the season. Dukes senior defensive lineman Jalen Green has already etched his name in the Sun Belt record book with 15.5 sacks this season and is one sack shy of the James Madison single-season record.

GOING BOWLING?

Three teams—Louisiana, Coastal Carolina and Texas State—can clinch bowl eligibility with a victory on Saturday. The Ragin’ Cajuns visit Arkansas State at 2 p.m. on ESPN+, the Chanticleers travel to Old Dominion at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+ and the Bobcats host Georgia Southern at 4 p.m. on ESPN+. A bowl berth would be the sixth-straight for Louisiana, the fourth-straight for Coastal Carolina and the first-ever for Texas State.

TOO CLOSE TO CALL

Though Georgia Southern owns a 5-1 lead in the all-time series with Texas State, four of the contests has been one-possession games. The teams enter Saturday’s matchup as two of the highest scoring teams in the conference. Texas State paces the Sun Belt and ranks 22nd nationally, averaging 35.1 points per game. Georgia Southern sits third in the conference and 28th in the country, averaging 33.8 points per game. Georgia Southern is 1-of-3 Sun Belt programs to have already clinched bowl eligibility on the season.

THE OLD MOUNTAIN FEUD Marshall and App State will meet in the Old Mountain Feud rivalry game at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, on NFL Network. The game—which has been sold out since July—will be the first league matchup between the programs in Boone since 1996, when both programs were part of the FCS-level Southern Conference (SoCon). App State leads the all-time series 15-10, though Marshall owns a 2-1 lead in the FBS era—including a 28-21 victory in Huntington a year ago in the first-ever meeting as Sun Belt Conference foes. Ten of the top 12 crowds in Kidd Brewer Stadium history have occurred since the start of the 2022 season, which all 11 home crowds during that span eclipsing 30,000 fans in attendance.
