INF/OF Cam Cauley and RHP Ben Peoples optioned to Round Rock; RHP Luis Curvelo designated for assignment
West Sacramento, Calif. — The Texas Rangers today announced the following transactions prior to Friday night’s series opener against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento:
- Infielder/outfielder Cody Freeman (#39) recalled from Triple-A Round Rock
- Left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales (#50) contract selected from Triple-A Round Rock
- Infielder/outfielder Cam Cauley optioned to Triple-A Round Rock
- Right-handed pitcher Ben Peoples optioned to Triple-A Round Rock
- Right-handed pitcher Luis Curvelo designated for assignment
Freeman, 25, will be in his third stint with Texas, as he was on the active roster from June 1-3 and June 13-21, batting .235 (4-17) in 7 games/3 starts. He has twice been on the Rangers’ 10-day Injured List this season: March 22-May 27 (lumbar stress reaction) and June 22-Aug. 3 (herniated disc). He will be seeking his first action with Texas since June 20 vs. San Diego. Freeman has spent the bulk of the campaign at Round Rock, batting .308/.373/.452/.825 with 3 home runs, 6 doubles, and 18 RBI in 26 contests while seeing action at second base, third base, and leftfield.
Gonzales, 34, had no record with one save and a 1.50 ERA (1 ER/6.0 IP) over 2 relief appearances during his earlier stint with Texas from July 21-30. He has also made 5 starts over multiple stints with Round Rock this season, going 1-1 with a 7.06 ERA (17 ER/21.2 IP). He most recently re-signed a minor league contract with Texas on Sunday, making a start here in West Sacramento that day against the River Cats (Giants Triple-A): L, 5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R-1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO1 HR, 64 pitches/43 strikes). A first-round pick of the Cardinals in 2013 from Gonzaga University, Gonzales has appeared in 172 MLB games/162 starts across 11 seasons with St. Louis (2014-15, 2017), Seattle (2017-23), Pittsburgh (2024), and Texas (2026). The Fort Collins, Colo. native missed the 2025 campaign while recovering from left flexor tendon and UCL surgery, as his Texas debut on July 21 vs. Chicago-AL was his first appearance in the Majors since August 7, 2024 vs. San Diego as a member of the Pirates.
The 23-year-old Cauley has batted .207 with one home run and one RBI over 28 games/15 starts for the Rangers this season, his first Major League action. He has spent the rest of the year with Round Rock, batting .262 with 8 home runs, 33 RBI, and 29 stolen bases in 74 games.
Peoples, 25, has a 0-1 record and 2.51 ERA (4 ER/14.1 IP) over 14 relief appearances spanning two stints (July 2-August 7, August 10-13) with Texas this season in his first Major League action. He will be seeking his first action with Round Rock, as he had gone 5-1 with a 2.39 ERA over 29 relief appearances with Triple-A Charlotte before he was acquired from Chicago-AL in a minor league trade on June 30 ahead of his first stint in the Majors.
The Rangers have seven days to trade, release or outright Curvelo to the minor leagues. The right-hander posted a 9.58 ERA in 9 relief appearances for Texas this season while registering an 8.42 ERA in 24 relief outings for Round Rock.
With today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with seven players on the 60-day Injured List (RHP’s Carter Baumler, Jose Corniell, and Jack Leiter, LHP’s Jalen Beeks and Robert Garcia, INF/OF Michael Helman, and C Danny Jansen).
