LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers overhauled their bullpen Monday, recalling right-hander Seth Halvorsen and reinstating left-hander Charlie Barnes to the active roster while optioning right-hander Kyle Hurt and designating right-hander Jonathan Hernández for assignment — a sweeping four-player transaction that came one day after both Hurt and Hernández each threw scoreless innings against Arizona.
The decision to part with Hernández, 30, was among the more counterintuitive moves of the club’s season. He had delivered two clean innings of relief Sunday against the Diamondbacks, yet the Dodgers still cut ties with the journeyman right-hander. In 15 appearances this season with Los Angeles, Hernández posted a 4.57-equivalent ERA and allowed 16 runs in 22⅓ innings, with 18 strikeouts. His major league career spans parts of six seasons with the Texas Rangers (2019–24), Seattle Mariners (2024) and Dodgers (2026), during which he compiled a 13-8 record, a 4.57 ERA and 168 strikeouts in 175⅓ innings. He was originally signed by Texas as a minor league free agent on Jan. 30, 2013.
Halvorsen, 26, has been all but untouchable since Los Angeles acquired him from Colorado on July 20 in exchange for right-hander Nick Frasso and outfielder Landyn Vidourek. In six appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City, he posted a 0.00 ERA while striking out eight in 6⅓ innings — a dominant audition that cleared his path back to the majors. Before the trade, Halvorsen appeared in 21 games for the Rockies this season, going 0-1 with a 4.74 ERA. Across three seasons in Colorado, he made 75 total appearances and went 3-4 with a 4.31 ERA, 66 strikeouts and 71 innings pitched. The Rockies selected him in the seventh round of the 2023 draft out of the University of Tennessee.
Barnes, 30, joins the Dodgers’ active roster for the fourth time this season, a testament to both his availability and the club’s persistent bullpen churn. He is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in four appearances with Los Angeles. Across parts of two major league seasons — with the Minnesota Twins in 2021 and with both the Chicago Cubs and Dodgers in 2026 — Barnes carries a 0-4 record with a 6.18 ERA in 51 innings at the major league level. In six minor league seasons, he has gone 30-26 with a 3.94 ERA and 403 strikeouts in 456⅔ innings. The Twins selected him in the fourth round of the 2017 draft out of Clemson University.
Hurt, 28, was optioned to Triple-A despite delivering a clean performance of his own Sunday, retiring all three batters he faced against Arizona and registering a strikeout. The Southern California native enters the minors with a 3-1 record, a 4.46 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 37⅓ innings this season. In three seasons with the Dodgers, he has compiled a 3.83 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 47 innings. The Miami Marlins drafted him in the fifth round of the 2020 draft out of the University of Southern California.
