BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox strengthened their pitching depth on Friday, selecting left‑hander Raymond Burgos from Triple‑A Worcester and adding him to the club’s active Major League roster. Burgos, who will wear No. 79, joins Boston ahead of its weekend slate following Thursday night’s matchup with the Chicago White Sox.
To clear space on the roster, the Red Sox optioned right‑hander Greg Weissert back to Worcester immediately after Thursday’s game. With the move, Boston’s 40‑man roster now stands at 39 players.
Burgos, 27, has spent the 2026 season primarily in Worcester’s rotation, appearing in 15 games — 14 of them starts — while posting a 5.63 ERA across 64 innings with 52 strikeouts. The Puerto Rico native made his Major League debut with the San Francisco Giants on June 24, 2024, allowing one run in a one‑inning relief appearance against the Chicago Cubs.
Originally drafted by Cleveland in the 18th round in 2016, Burgos signed with Boston as a minor‑league free agent on May 7. Across 159 career minor‑league games, including 36 starts, he owns a 3.73 ERA with 358 strikeouts over 359⅓ innings.
Weissert, 31, pitched one inning of relief Thursday night before being optioned. The veteran right‑hander has been a steady presence in Boston’s bullpen this season, appearing in 48 games and producing a 3–2 record with a 3.97 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 45⅓ innings.
A New York native and 2016 18th‑round selection by the Yankees, Weissert has logged 211 Major League appearances between New York (2022–23) and Boston (2024–26), compiling a 3.43 ERA with 192 strikeouts across 207 innings.
